John and Jane were Joseph A. Bard's great-grandparents, grandparents of Chester Earl Bard, parents of Ellen McKee Bard Starkey. John was a Civil War veteran who saw action as a Private with the Illinois 76th Infantry at Vicksburg, Mississippi and Fort Blakely, Alabama. John's Civil War records and pension files are in the National Archives in Washington, DC. Although Jane had remarried as a widow, she and John are buried together in the GAR Cemetery in Watseka, IL.
