From the "American Revolutionary Soldiers Buried in Texas," author Clovis Brakebill, Texas Society, Sons of the American Revolution (TXSSAR) REVOLUTIONARY WAR PATRIOT GRAVE MARKING PROJECT

Evan Thomas Watson was born January 11, 1759 in Albemarle County, Virginia, and served under General Lafayette as he retreated from Lord Cornwallis. He came to Texas after fighting in the American Revolution and settled in Bowie County, when he died June 15, 1834 at the age of 76. He was buried in the Watson Family Cemetery in Bowie County, but when lake Wright Patman was built only two token graves were moved from the lakebed, and Evan Watson was not one of them!

Descendants of Evan Thomas WATSON (1759-1834) who came from KY to Arkansas Territory
in the Fall of 1833. Here is a brief summary:
Evan Thomas WATSON, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, migrated to Arkansas Territory with
his three living sons, Jesse, William and Coleman in the Fall of 1833. They settled in Hickman's Prairie,
joining the McKINNEY and AKIN families, among others, who had preceded them. Evan's son,
Evan Thomas WATSON, Jr. had come to Arkansas the previous year, and died in 1832 in Hempstead County.

The area they settled in was at the time considered Miller County, Arkansas Territory, but the border
with Mexico was in dispute. When Texas gained independence as a Republic in 1836, the border was
redrawn, and Miller County was abolished. The region of Hickman's Prairie became Red River and
Bowie counties of Texas. What had been the eastern portion of Miller County was absorbed into
Lafayette County, Arkansas. These events, coupled with the deaths of Evan and his sons Jesse and
William by late 1834, has made the search for estate documents concerning this family very challenging, as some records have been found in Red River and Bowie TX, but some are likely held yet in Arkansas.

The surviving son of Evan WATSON, Coleman WATSON, resided for a time in Bowie County TX, but
moved to Grayson County TX by 1850. The descendants of William WATSON remained in NE Texas,
and Rebecca DENTON Watson, widow of Jesse WATSON, moved to the Alabama/Mississipi border
where her brothers lived. Jesse and Rebecca's son, John WATSON, migrated to Collin County Texas
when he turned 21, and sought out his uncle Coleman WATSON to help him apply to the state of Texas
for land stemming from his father's early settlement, and alleged headright grant in Texas. The application failed, but John remained in Texas and married Coleman's daughter Lucy WATSON. Lucy died shortly thereafter, and John WATSON remarried to Julia WHITAKER in 1860; it is this union from which I descend.

We do know of that the biography written by Samuel C. WATSON for the BIOGRAPHICAL SOUVENIR OF GRAYSON COUNTY TEXAS does contain some errors. Notably, Evan was not brought to (Logan Co.) KY as a child - he migrated to Madison Co., KY with Joseph WATSON and Jesse WATSON about 1788; and perhaps followed by John WATSON by 1790. It is this John who may be Evan's father. Evan's father, however, may have been William - and not John: A William WATSON also sold land in Madison Co., KY in 1816 - the same time Evan sold his land and left Madison Co., KY. This William could have been Evan's father - the William from Orange Co., VA circa 1750's - or this William could be another possible brother. Evan remained in Madison Co., KY until 1816, and therefore all of his children were born in Albemarle Co., VA or Madison Co., KY. It is not known where Evan resided from 1816 to 1819 (during which his sons Jesse, John and William were married), but he appears in Warren Co., KY in 1819. I do however think that the claim that Evan's father may have indeed come from London. It is not too hard to believe that Evan's grandson Samuel would have known of his families ultimate heritage. Yet, I also think that the London link might have been another generation further back. My latest theory is that our WATSON line landed in Baltimore in the early 1700's, with a John and William migrating south to Orange Co., VA where lines were redrawn in the 1760's to include at least John in Albemarle Co., VA. Other Maryland WATSON's which were possibly kin then came to the Orange/Albemarle area in the late 1700's. These would be Walter WATSON and Isaac WATSON. Isaac had three children marry into the same LAMB family as Evan's daughter Nancy. I have also researched the lines of Jesse, Joseph and John "Hightop" WATSON. John "Hightop" was indeed the son of John WATSON and Margaret "Peggy" UNKNOWN. It is likely this John WATSON that Evan gave power of attorney to in 1801 from Madison Co., KY. Other WATSON men who settled on Muddy Creek in Madison Co., KY who were likely kin where Paul WATSON, Samuel WATSON, David WATSON and Elizabeth WATSON who married Samuel YATES/YEATS.
