JOHN VARDAMAN4 MCKINNEY (WILLIAM FRANKLIN3, RANE2, CHARLES1) (Source: World Family Tree Vol. 7, Ed. 1 pedigree 2983, Tree #1550, Date of Import: Jul 13, 1997.) was born Aug 12, 1822 in Wayne Co., Ky (Source: World Family Tree Vol. 7, Ed. 1 pedigree 2983, Tree #1550, Date of Import: Jul 13, 1997.), and died Aug 12, 1883 in Polk Co., Mo (Source: (1) World Family Tree Vol. 7, Ed. 1 pedigree 2983, Tree #1550, Date of Import: Jul 13, 1997., (2) Intro to Obit List from The History of Polk Co. Notes for J
OHN VARDAMAN MCKINNEY:
1860 Polk Co., Mo Census, Post Office Bolivar
John, with his wife and oldest daughter, left Wayne Co., KY about 1845,
settling in Bates Co., MO for a few years, and continuing on to Polk Co., MO
by about 1852. They came to Polk Co. to be near Rane and Elizabeth (Payne)
McKinney. Rane was John's uncle, and Elizabeth was Rachel's aunt.
At age 40, John left the home of his wife and 8 children, ranging in age from
age 20 down to less than age 2, to go to Fayettville, Ark. to enlist in the
Confederate Army Aug. 17, 1862 for a period of 3 years. He enlisted into
"Hunter's Battalion Missouri Infantry. This was changed to the 8th Regiment
Mo. Infantry, and finally to the 11th Rgiment Mo. Infantry, while he was with
them. He was a private in Company G.
John was captured and taken prisoner at Helena, Ark. July 4, 1863. He was
"Forwarded to Memphis, Tenn., on the steamer 'Silver Moon' July 4, and from
thence on same steamer to Cairo, Ill., July 5, 1863". He was put in the
Yankee prison at Alton, Ill., About a month after arriving there, he caught
and survived Small Pox, being put in the U.S.A Post and Prison Hospital,
Alton, Ill. on Aug. 29, and being returned to quarters Sept. 7, 1863.
Conditions at Alton Prison were said to be terrible--crowded and disease
ridden, and many died there. John apparently survived there from July '63 to
March, '65. There is a paper in his file where he appears on a roll of
prisoners who object to to being exchanged, and wants to take the oath of
allegiance without reservation or evasion.
On March 17, 1865, he signed a paper of volunteer enlistment into "The Army
of the United States of America" (Union). They were forming companies of
Rebel prisoners who were now willing to join the Union army. Some had perhaps
truly changed their views, and some no doubt were just willing to go to any
lengths to leave the prison. John is described as 5 ft. 10 inches tall, dark
copmplexion, Blue eyes, Dark hair, and by occupation a farmer.
The companies made up of these men were not put back into battle, but were
sent west to guard wagon trains, builders of railroads against Indians, etc.
They were sometimes refered to as "The Galvanized Yankees" --Rebels with a
thin coat of Yankee.
There is a book "Galvanized Yankees" by Alexander (Dee) Brown which tells of
the hardships of this group and which says, "John McKinney of Kentucky and
David Malone of Tenn. were 43, the oldest in Co. C."
The troops were sent to Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas and then by boat up the
Missouri River to the mouth of the Niobrara River, Nebraska Territory. From
July 1 to July 4 they marched shoeless and in threadbare uniforms across the
sand dunes of Nebraska in temperatures of 106 degrees. In late August they
reached Ft. Connor - later called Ft. Reno. John V. was reported on Sept.
12, 1865 as "has been unfit for duty 60 days - during march across the plains
this Soldier contacted Sore Eyes which have resulted in ulceration and partial
loss of vision." The Doctor's report, at Ft. Connor, states, "I certify that
I have carefully examined the said John V. McKinney, a private of Captain
George M. Willifords Company, and find him incapable of performing the duties
of a soldier because of ulceration and thickening of the cornea in both eyes.
I have known the said soldier for a period over 60 days and am perfectly
satisfied that his vision is so far gone from opacity of the cornea as to
render his services as a soldier useless. I would also state that said
soldier contracted this disease while in service."
John was discharged the 20th of November, 1865, at Fort Connor, Dakota
Territory, and returned home to Polk Co.
Only a couple years after the Civil War ended, Rachel died, on Dec. 15, 1868,
and was buried in the McKinney Cemetery in Polk Co. Mo.
On Jan. 27, 1870, John married again to Martha Carolyn Moore. Martha was
born Mar. 12, 1839 in Tenn. *Judy McKinn@aol.com
