1. EDWARD¹ COX (COX^A) was born April 25, 1810 in Tennessee, and died July 21, 1865 in killed by Indians, Hamilton Co. Texas. He married (1) HANNAH ELIZABETH WILLIAMS March 23, 1833 in Cole Co. Missouri, daughter of KEELAND WILLIAMS and RACHEL UPCHURCH. She was born Abt. 1814 in Kentucky, and died 1855 in Johnson Co. Texas. He married (2) MARTHA MATILDA LANE Abt. 1857 in Erath Co. Texas. She was born Abt. 1820 in Texas.

Edward Cox of Erath County
Edward Cox was born in Tennessee about 1810. His father was a native of Tennessee and his mother was a native of Kentucky. He married (1) Hannah Williams on 23 March 1833 in Cole County, Missouri.
Edward came to Texas in 1849 from Missouri and settled in Hopkins County. Then the family moved to Johnson County. Hannah died and was buried there in 1855. Edward and Hannah were reared in the Church of Christ and remained faithful until their deaths. Edward was interested in politics and voted the Populist Party ticket.
After living in Johnson County about six years, he moved to Erath County, a sparsely settled frontier. He was successfully engaged in the cattle business when the Civil War started, during which time he sold beef to the government. Having accepted Confederate money, he lost heavily.
The Indians were troublesome--stealing livestock and raiding the unprotected settlers. After one such raid, Edward and a group of young men followed in pursuit. On this mission, Edward was killed and scalped by the Indians, who took his horse,saddle and bridle. Also killed was a young man named Hollis. Both are buried in Hamilton, Texas.

Sarah E., deceased, was the wife of Gasham Bills; Ann, wife of E. Miller; Jane, who became the wife of Mr. Bills after her sister’s death; Alzai, wife of Daniel Moore; Zilsa, wife of Thomas Lane; Derinda, wife of L. Evens; and Lucy, wife of J. Lane. His second wife bore him four children: Mary, wife of John Dowty; and John, Hall and Frank, all farmers.
