Descendants of John Ridgdaile

Generation No. 1

1.  JOHN1 RIDGDAILE was born 1673 in Virginia, and died 1717 in St. Ann's Parish, Essex Co. Virginia.  He married ELIZABETH NOELL Abt. 1699 in Rappahannock Co. Virginia, daughter of CORNELIUS NOELL and ELIZABETH PAGE.  She was born Abt. 1678 in Occupacia, Essex Co. Virginia, and died September 20, 1756 in King George Co. Virginia.

Notes for JOHN RIDGDAILE:

From the location of this John  Ridgdaile, I believe he may have been a  grandson of William Ridgdell / Ridgell who landed in Virginia in 1634 / 1635. William may have married at an older age, and left young children, or had a son who died young and left young children. John Ridgdaile may be from a separate Ridgdaile line in England, nothing is proven. A Richard Ridgell transported to Maryland in 1660's, a William Ridgell was bound out in Jamaica for four years in the 1680's, and this John was indentured in 1690's. they may all be related in some way. Another possiblity is this is a John Ridgdaile born in Kent Co. England, Jan. 30, 1673, to James and Joane Ridgdaile, but no source information has been found todate on this.

North Carolina and Virginia enacted apprenticeship laws similar to those in England. In 1646 Virginia passed a law giving justices of the peace at their own discretion the right to bind out children of the poor "to avoyd sloath and idleness wherewith such children are easily corrupted, as also for the relief of such parents whose poverty extends not to give them breeding" [Hening, Statutes at Large, XXVII:336].

John Ridgdaile is found as a bond servant to John Sterling. The preceding story leads me to believe John's father, probably Richard Ridgell of Maryland, may have died with young children, leaving his son(s) to be bonded out to others for apprenticeship or servitude for their keep, not uncommon during that time period. This John Ridgdaile and a friend named Matthew Andros (Andrews) apparently felt the need to move on , and I suspect they canoed up the Rappahanock River to Essex Co. Virginia, where John Ridgdaile later marries a widow, and gains some property. He may have left some heirs, probably the John Ridgdale found in nearby Orange Co. Virginia. John Ridgdale of Orange Co. Virgina  is possibly the John Ridgdel / Ridgel later found in Tazewell Co.Virginia  1770's and Lincoln Co. Kentucky, or his son. John Ridgdaile may also possibly be the father of the Richard Ridgell / Riggell / Ridgel found in Goochland Co. Virginia, 1730's and Edgecombe Co. North Carolina, 1740's, but this is very uncertain.

Notes for ELIZABETH NOELL:

Also found maiden name as Elizabeth Lambert, Elizabeth Ramsey, Elizabeth Stallard, and Elizabeth Boulware Bowler.

Her maiden name was Noell.  I did find her as married to Jonathan Hackley, and may have been married to a James Andrews.

Woodford Hackley's research of John Hackley suggests, John Hackley was married in 1680 to a widow, Elizabeth Andrews, daughter of John and Sarah Lambert.   They were the parents of 6 children. Soon after John's death she was married to John Ridgedale. and had at least one son by him. Married 3 times. Once after this marriage.

I found some data that indicated that her name may have been Elizabeth Daniels, and they were married after 1674.

Notes for JOHN (RIDGEDELL) RIDGEL:

Early Southwestern Virginia Pioneers , compiled by Robert L. Garrison

To encourage expansion, Virginia's government was granting "proof of settlement" titles to land parcels to those who were brave enough to go after them.  The young Virginians as well as a few older ones formed a group to explore the wilds of western Virginia.  A fairly massive "hunting expedition"  was put together. All were interested in obtaining a land grant and this would be a golden opportunity.

The original hunting party was in place in the year 1767-1769. It consisted of: Morris Griffith, (for whom Morris Knob was named); James Burke, (Discoverer of Burke's Garden); Moses Higgenbotham; Rees Bowen; Thomas Maxwell; Wm. Webb; James Moore; John Pogue; JOHN RIDGEL; Wm. Wynne; Wm. Butler; Jessee Evans; Elisha Cary; Wm. Webb; John Taylor; David Ward; Peter Harmon; Samuel Fergerson; Wm. Garrison; James Ogleton; Wm. Wynne; Jacob Harmon; Wm. Harmon; Benjamin Joslin; Wm Asbury.

Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement of Virginia; Vol 2, pgs. 86-95

by Lyman Chalkley

Obadiah Garwood made the first settlement in 1752. Henry was in the habit of collecting the men and fighting the Indians. On his return from such an expedition he called at his brother's (Valentine?), who lived near complainant. One of his sons named Daniel was killed by Indians. Henry Harman and Hezekiah Harman answer: In 1752 Obadiah Garwood and his two sons, Noah and Samuel, came from the Northward and settled; remained some time and then went to remove their families, but the Indian War broke out and the country became untenable. Valentine Harman removed to Kentucky about 1775-1776. William Inglish died in 1782 testate, leaving the land to his daughter Susannah, wife of Abraham Trigg. Jeremiah Pate deposes he helped the Garwoods improve the land. He says they were Samuel and his two sons, Obadiah and Noah. Thomas Pierie

deposes 30th, May, 1805: Daniel Harman, Sr., is brother to Henry Harman, Sr., and uncle to Henry Harman, Jr., and his father-in-law and uncle to Hezekiah Harman. Jeremiah Pate, Sr., is a brother-in-law to Henry Harman, Sr., and an uncle to Henry Harman, Jr. Thomas Pierie's son married William Wynne's daughter. Col. James Maxwell deposes he went to Clinch in 1772. John Peerey deposes. Jesiah Wynne, son of William, deposes. Daniel Harman, Sr., deposes 30th May, 1805, that the spring he moved to the head of Clinch; Valentine Harman lived on the plantation where Henry Harman, Jr., now lives and Valentine sold to Wm. Wynne for a mare, a horse and a wagon. Samuel Walker deposes 30th May, 1805: In 1771 he came to the head of Clinch and met Valentine, who said he was coming to it or this country to see after "some Harres that run Hear." The following fall, deponent came again with Robert Moffitt. Shortly afterwards two men came out, viz: John Stutler and Uriah Stone, and the spring following, said Moffett moved his family out. Oliver Wynne  deposes, son of William. Lawrence Murry deposes that the spring after the Chericee War he came into this country. William Wynne was in possession that and the next year, and then his son-in-law Peter Edwards was in possession 3 or 4 years, then Wynne occupied it one or two years, then a cropper named JOHN RIDGEL (RIGDGEL) occupied it. Daniel Harman, Sr. (above), is brother of Henry Harman, Sr. Christopher Marrs, brother-in-law  Wm. Wynne, deposes Jeremiah Pate, Sr., of Little River in Montgomery

County, is brother-in-law to Henry Harman, Sr., who is uncle to Henry Harman, Jr. Henry Harman, Sr., had one of his sons killed, skalped and massacred by the Indians in the attempt of settling the land who left a wife and four young children. John Peery (Blacksmith) deposes  (there seem to have been two John Peerys).

Jenny Wiley story 1789

Jenny Wiley, a young American pioneer woman, was captured by Indians in the fall 1789 and witnessed the murder of her brother and five children. She escaped after several months of captivity and, while pursued by her captors, made her way through many miles of wilderness to safety.

Jean "Jenny" Sellards, the daughter of Hezekiah Sellards, was born in Pennsylvania about 1760. She met and married an Irish immigrant, Thomas Wiley, in Walkers Creek, Tazewell (now Bland ) County, Virginia in 1778 or 1779. Thomas built a small log cabin in the Upper Clinch River valley and the couple set about raising a family.

Jenny's sister lived near by with husband John Borders. Several families named Harman also lived in the area.

On October 1, 1789 a small group of Cherokee and Shawnee Indians came into the valley to seek vengeance on Matthias Harman who had shot and killed several Indians sometime past. Uncertain of Matthias' whereabouts, the raiding party fell upon the Wiley cabin by mistake.

Thomas was away on a trip when the attack came. Jenny, her 4 children and her younger brother were at home alone. John Borders stopped by to warn Jenny that Indians were in the area, and urge her to go to his house for safety. She told him she would finish some chores and then be right over.

Sometime after Borders had left, the Indians rushed the cabin and brutally beat, scalped and murdered her brother and three of her children. Jenny, who was 7 months pregnant, and an infant child were taken captive and led down what was later called Jenny's Creek, along the Tug and Big Sandy rivers toward the Ohio.

News of the massacre spread fast through the tiny settlement and a party of men, including Lazarus Damron and Matthias Harmon, started pursuit. When the Indians realized they were being followed and that Jenny and the baby were slowing them down they killed the infant by bashing it's head against a tree. The settlers chased them for several days but were never able to catch up and finally lost the trail.

Jenny became very ill and the Indians were forced into camp until she could travel. Sick and alone, she prematurely gave birth to her son in a primitive rock shelter. The Indians brought food and kept a fire going until she and the baby were well enough to travel.

William Ely tells us "when the child was three weeks old [Addington says three months] they decided to test him, to see whether be would make a brave warrior. Having tied him to a flat piece of wood, they slipped him into the water to see if he would cry. He screamed furiously, and they took him by the heels and dashed his brains out against an oak-tree."

Luther F. Addington gives us a slightly different account in his unpublished manuscript The Capture of Jenny Wiley: "In desperation Jenny dashed into the stream, recovered the child and returned to the rock house with it. She had no more than arrived when one of the savages came with a tomahawk, killed the baby and scalped it. Then, carrying the scalp, he turned away, not bothering Jenny. And there, alone, the weeping Jenny buried her child at the edge of the rock house."

The group then moved on to the area of Mud Creek in what is now Johnson County, Kentucky, and set up a permanent camp.

Here Jenny's life was reduced to the most abject slavery, and was made to carry water, wood, and build fires. For some time they bound her when they were out hunting; but as the weeks passed the Indians relaxed, and at last permitted her to remain untied. One rainy night when the warriors were out of the camp Jenny slipped away from the fire and set out on a perilous journey.

Jenny followed Mud Creek to it's mouth, then crossed Main Paint Creek, journeyed up a stream (also known later as Jenny's Creek) for several miles, over a ridge and then down Little Paint Creek to the Levisa Fork of Big Sandy River. As daylight broke Jenny could see and hear men working on the opposite side of the river at Harmons Blockhouse in Floyd (now Johnson) County, Kentucky. She called out, and informed them that she was a captive escaping from the Indians. Not having boats, the men rolled logs into the river and lashed them together with grape vines to form a raft, then crossed over and carried her back to safety just as the pursuing Indians came into sight.

The brave Jenny was reunited with her husband in the summer of 1790. The couple eventually settled near Paintsville in Johnston County, Kentucky and raised 5 more children. In later years, Jenny professed that God had blessed her by replacing the children she had lost. Thomas died in 1810 and Jenny in 1831. Both were buried in Johnson County not far from their last home.

Excerpts of :

THE PEOPLE, Plaintiff and Appellant, v. McFARLAND BEASLEY et al., Defendants and Respondents.

ELKINGTON, J.

The People appeal from an order setting aside an information (Pen. Code, § 995) and from a certain order suppressing evidence.

Following a preliminary hearing commencing November 18, {Page 250 Cal.App.2d 74} 1964, at which defendants were held to answer a charge of receiving stolen property, the District Attorney of Contra Costa County, on December 4, 1964, filed a two-count information charging that defendants Beasley and Reed did, on or about August 28, 1964, burglarize premises located at 588 Spring Street, Richmond, California; and (in the alternative) did buy and receive certain property, i.e., a Miller Falls saw and an Olivetti calculator, which had been stolen, and which were known by them to have been stolen.

The facts as developed at the preliminary examination are essentially without dispute.

Edward L. Ridgel, a concrete contractor, operated a place of business at 588 Spring Street, Richmond, California. When he went to this place of business on the morning of August 28, 1964, he found the door to his office broken down. This was an inner door since the office was enclosed in a large metal building. The metal siding had been ripped away from the building in two different places. The office door had been locked the day before and Mr. Ridgel had given no one permission to enter. A Miller Falls power saw and an Underwood-Olivetti calculator, both identifiable by serial number, were missing from the office; both had been in the office when it was locked up the previous day. Mr. Ridgel reported the burglary to the Richmond police at about 7:30 a.m. of the day of discovery. The police subsequently put information regarding the stolen property on the police teletype....
