Descendants of Joel Ridgell

10. WASHINGTON JOEL2 RIDGELL (JOEL1, RICHARDA, JOHNB, WILLIAMC) was born 1810 in South Carolina, and died Bef. 1860 in Alabama. He married SUSAN C. THOMPSON Abt. 1829 in prob. Wilcox Co. Alabama, daughter of HEZEKIAH THOMPSON and LUCY EVANS. She was born 1810 in Marlboro Co. South Carolina, and died Aft. 1870 in Texas.

Notes for W
ASHINGTON JOEL RIDGELL:
There is very little found on this man, Joel Washington Ridgell, or Washington Joel Ridgell, if he exsisted at all. In the estate papers of his father, Joel Ridgell Sr. of Marion Co. South Carolina 1828, Washington Ridgell is not listed as a child of Joel Ridgell, but he could have been out of the area when the papers were filed. Washington Ridgell is listed in 1832 as son of Joel Ridgell.

Marion Co. South Carolina Probate Records, by Lucille Utley & Danny Smith.. Three Rivers Historical Society, Hemingway S.C.
page 154. Petition of Joel Ridgell and Eli Mendenhall sheweth that some time in the month of December 1828 Joel Ridgell died intestate, having been seized and possessed at the time of his death of certain real estate, leavlng his wife Frances Ridgell (alias Bethea) Mary Ridgell, now and at that time the wife of the above named Eli Mendenhall, Elizabeth Rogers, wife of Philip Rogers, Delight Griggs, widow of John Griggs, Sarah Nettles daughter of Mary Mendenhall and grand daughter of the said decd. Richard Ridgell, John W. Ridgell, Swinney Ridgell, Harriet Ridgell Leonora Ridgell, Mary Ridgell, Parthenine Ridgell, and Joel Ridgell, one of the petitioners, heirs at law and legal representatives of Joel Ridgell, deed. and entitled to a distributive share of estate. 28 Nov. 1829 signed Joel Ridgell and E. C. Mendenhall.

The Joel Ridgell mentioned in the estate papers of 1828 would have been Joel Ridgell who was in Lexington Co. South Carolina, another brother; others mentioned were Richard Ridgell, Swinney Ridgell, John W. Ridgell, and their sisters.
In the 1832 estate papers, John W. Ridgell is not mentioned, but Washington Ridgell is, along with Joel Ridgell, Richard Ridgell, Sweeny Ridgell, and their sisters.

Marion Co. South Carolina Probate Records, by Lucille Utley & Danny Smith.. Three Rivers Historical Society, Hemingway S.C.
Filed 9 Feb. 1832. Joel Ridgell, Richard Ridgell, Washington Ridgell, Sweeny Ridgell, Delight Griggs, Eli Mendenhall and his wife, Phillip Rodgers and Elizabeth his wife and Benjamin Nettles and Sarah his wife show that Joel Ridgell died leaving land, slaves, etc. and heirs: Frances Ridgell his widow and orators: Joel Ridgell, Richard Ridgell, Washington Ridgell, Sweeny Ridgell, and oratrix ,Mary Mendenhall, is the wife of orator Eli Mendenhall. Elizabeth Rodgers wife of Philip Rodgers, Delight Griggs. Harriet Ridgell Leonora Ridgell, Mary Ridgell and Partheny Ridgell his children; and oratrix Sarah Nettles (wife of Benjamin Nettles) his grandchild and the only child of Sarah Mendenhall deceased who was the daughter of Joel Ridgell deceased--

Washington Ridgell is listed in the 1830 census of Wilcox Co. Alabama, and John W. Ridgell is in Wilcox County land records, Nov. 30, 1830.
Both John W. Ridgdell and Washington Ridgdell can only be found together in Yazoo Co. Mississippi on the 1834 Tax list. This doesn't prove they are different men, but the census could have counted John W. Ridgell twice. On the other hand the ages of the husband, Washington Ridgell 1830 Wilcox, Co. and the Joel Ridgell of 1840 Wilcox Co. census, does not match up with John W. Ridgell's age, and John W. Ridgell was enumerated in Union Co. Arkansas in 1840. He could have been enumerated in both places in the same year. The families of J.W. Ridgell of 1840 Union Co. Arkansas and 1840 Joel Ridgell of Wilcox Co. Alabama and Joel Ridgell of 1840 Lexington Co. South Carolina show these all to be separate men.

Susan Ridgell, the wife of Washington Joel Ridgell, was enumerated in Marengo Co. Alabama 1850 and Union Co. Arkansas, 1860. Her age and her children would have matched up with the Washington RIdgell of 1830 Wilcox Co. census, and the Joel Ridgell of 1840 Wilcox Co. Alabama.
Questions:
Susan Ridgell had two earlier daughters, but her first born son, Richard Richmond Ridgell was born in 1838. Why did Susan's father Hezekiah Thompson cut her off in his 1838 will ? " ...his property to be equally divided among his 8 legal heirs, except for Susan Ridgel. Her portion to go to her 3 children after her death. " Why did Emiline Slone Ridgell, wife of John W. Ridgell, divorce him in 1838 Wilcox Co. Alabama? Could it be that John W. Ridgell was AKA Washington Joel Ridgell, and used a different name and age to carry on with a consort ? John W. Ridgell is believed to have fathered some of the mulatto slave children on his Monticelo Plantation, and possibly fathered a "Lucky Ridgell" a Choctaw Indian son. Susan Ridgell continued to have children through 1849, would John W. Ridgell have continued to see her, after he remarried Emiline in 1840 Drew Co. Arkansas, if he was also AKA Washington Joel Ridgell ? There is a Joel W. Ridgell in Ouachita Co. Tax list of 1852-1855. Was this Washington Joel Ridgell or Joel W. Ridgell, son of Sweeny Ridgell ? I have yet to prove that John W. Ridgell is or isn't the same as Washington Joel Ridgell, probably not, just a thought. Dr. George W. Ridgell lived in Ouachita Co. Arkansas 1860 before moving to Texas by 1870. Lucy Ridgell was George's wife, his first cousin, the first born daughter of Susan Thompson Ridgell, born in South Carolina 1830.

1810 Marion Co. South Carolina census for Joel Ridgell , had two males under 10 and two males 10-16. These males could be John W. b. 1802 and Washington born 1810, under 10, and Joel Jr. and Richard R. born 1798, 10-16.
