The "Godfrey" Birds of England and Canada

Updated October 27, 2005

This is a transcription of a family tree originally prepared in 1911 by Col. S. Godfrey Bird, DSO, assisted by Herbert W. Bird Geoffry Herringham, and other family members. Substantial parts of it have been added by succeeding generations of the family.

The "Godfrey" Birds had an interesting tradition of giving many (if not most)of their sons the middle name "Godfrey". The tradition appears to have begun after Martha Godfrey married Joseph Bird in the middle of the eighteenth century, in England.

I hope to add individuals, facts and dates to this tree, and would be grateful for assistance from other family members.

I am particularly interested in learning more about Shearman Godfrey Bird and Amoi (Amy) Chun, who moved from China through England to Barrie, Ontario Canada in 1867. Shearman was a young Lieutenant in the British Royal Engineers who served in China during the Tai Ping Rebellion, and married a woman who by accounts, clothing, etc., was well-born. I am one of the great-great-grandchildren of this couple.
