ix. | Hibbard Crane, born Abt. 1763; died Abt. 1801 in New Orleans, Louisiana. |
Notes for Hibbard Crane: To date I have found only four records concerning Hibbard Crane. One is found in thebook MISSISSIPPI-LOUISIANA BORDER COUNTRY by Marie T. Logan. On page 261 she writes.........Captain Phelps had kept a journal in which he had listed the names of the original party, among which was that of Captain Silas Crane of the Connecticut Militia. He was soon joined by his wife, Lucy Waterman Crane, and his two sons, Waterman and Heberd............ ( The original party refers to the Lyman Expedition.) The other three records are all found in the book THE NATCHEZ COURT RECORDS, 1767-1805, compiled by May Wilson McBee.On page 33 is the following record: 22 April 1787, John Bisland to Waterman Crane and Hiburd (Crane), negro "Jupiter" of Senegal nation, aged 30, for $300 "In a note".Signed by Bisland and Waterman Crane, wit: James McIntosh, Juan Carreras, Carlos de Grand-Pre. On page 42 is the will of Lucy Crane ( see full text of will under Lucy Waterman Crane) in which she wills to her two sons, Waterman and Hibbard, her estate to be equally divided. On page 55 is the will of Richard Carpenter dated 14 July 1788.Richard was a store keeper in the town of Natchez, and listed with his will is a long list of names as Debts Outstanding.Among the list are the names Waterman Crane and Hubbard Crane. Since no other records have been found, it is my assumption that Hibbard Crane died sometime relatively soon after 1788, and since Waterman Crane was his only sibling in the Mississippi Territory, all of Hibbard's property was assumed by Waterman. One more piece of evidence of Hibbard's death is found in the 1792 Spanish census taken for the Natchez District.Waterman Crane is listed as living on Bayou Pierre, but there is no mention of Hibbard Crane. It is again an assumption on my part, but I believe, if indeed Hibbard died in this time frame, he was probably buried with his parents, Silas and Lucy Crane, Silas and Lucy both having died in or near 1787.Further research will help determine if these assumptions are correct. |
