Notes for Richard Fancher:
Richard Fancher was born April 19, 1767 in New Jersey, but was in Eastern Tennessee some time around 1790. At that time, East Tennessee was the western frontier of the United States. Local historians of Sevier County, Tennessee place him on the West Fork of the Little Pigeon River by 1790, in the area now know as Pigeon Forge. He received a grant for land where the town of Pigeon Forge is now located.
Richard and his wife Mary were members of the West Fork of the Little Pigeon River Baptist Church by September 5, 1803. In October of 1812, he was on a church committee to repair the meeting house. He, his wife and daughter-in-law were granted letters of dismission in August 1815 when he probably moved to the Mississippi Territory, the part that would become Alabama. The 1816 census of Monroe County, Mississippi Territory shows Richard and nine children with son James living nearby. The 1830 and 1840 census show him in Bibb County. In May 1825, he was appointed an Overseer of the poor in one district of Bibb County.
Richard died August 21, 1849 in Bibb County, Alabama and is buried at Cahaba Valley Baptist Church, which he and ten others founded in 1817.
