"ShipL'ebro, Capt Perry, departed Havre De Grace, France on November 2, 1842 forGalveston, Texas. They had a longtedious trip of 75 days in crossing the ocean and some of the passengers died atsea. The immigrants were all Frenchexcept two families - Conrads and Wilkes. Many of them were really German, but all spoke French, being Alsatians. On New Years day of 1843 the good ship landedat Galveston, and the tired and almost worn out colonist gladly set foot onTexas soil, although it was a strange and foreign country to them, thousands ofmiles from the place of their nativity. There were 114 passengers aboard the ship compromised of 42 families." Notes for Theresa Pichot:
Theresa Pichot's family lived in Castroville, MedinaCo., Texas. During the time that shewas a teenager there had been a number of reports of Indians stealinglivestock. Theresa had a horse that sheprized greatly. To make sure that herhorse didn't get stolen, she would tie it to her bed with its head inside herwindow at night. One night somethingwoke her. When she opened her eyes therewas an Indian in her bedroom. She didn'tmove and kept her eyes shut. When sheopened them again the Indian was gone and the rope tied to her bed had beencut. The horse was gone and she neversaw it again.
This story was related to me by her great greatniece, Betty Jo (Riddle) Blair.
Notes for Joseph Brieden:
Joseph was the third boy out of five. All five boys were born in Alsace near thetown of Colmer France to Andreas Brieden and Elizabeth Zuercher. His family farmed 20 acres on Arroyo Verde, growing crops and raisinglivestock.
In lateryears they purchased property in D'Hanis and farmed on the Seco. It was near the wagon freight haul route fromPort Lavaca to Mexico. Joseph, hisfather and brothers, joined the wagon freight train hauling freight from PortLavaca to Mexico and made a good living. They would wait for a ship to come in, load the ox-drawn wagon and honorthe consignment. In Mexico, for example, for the return trip to the coast they would gather a load of coffee andpiloncillo mostly for Europe. Forsecurity they had to travel in groups or trains as protection against banditsand Indians (Tschirhart, library 197). Joseph and his brothers had several near run in with the Indians. Two of the boys were gathering grass for athatch roof when they stopped a group of Indians. The boys left their horses and hid in sometall grass. The Indians took theirhorses but didn't find the boys. Theystayed hidden until nightfall and then made their way home on foot. Leopold, Josephs younger brother, hadanother close call when Indians began to chase him while riding one day. He rode up a hillside and the Indians did notfollow. It is supposed that the Indianssuspected an ambush over the hill and this allowed Leopold to escape (Tschirhart, library 198).
AfterJoseph's mother was found drown, Louise being the oldest girl had most of theresponsibility of the home when the menfolks were out on freight routes. They lived in a low stone house with a grassroof.
Joseph'sfather was well educated and taught him and his other brothers and sisters toread and write the English and German language.
He wouldmake homemade wine in the cellar.
Helped build the boat. Would make homemade molasses out of sugarcane. Tended to the fields with his sonWilliam. Died there at the home

The other young man panicked, jumped on hishorse and rode away to save himself. Leopold Brieden calmly got Catherine on her horse, mounted his ownhorse, then whipped Catherine's and his own to get them going. Oberentzen is/was in the Haut Rhin province ofFrance. It is one of the provinces thatmake up the region of Alsace. It is justacross the Rhine River from Germany. Many of the people who live in the region are ethnic Germans and do notconsider themselves to be French. Theyspeak a German dialect. Many of theAlsatians who immigrated to Texas in the 1840's as part of Henri Castro'scolony were of this stock. They haveleft their cultural imprint on Castroville, Texas, and the surroundingcounty.

39. William Leo8 Brieden(Theresa7 Pichot, Regina6 Haller, Marie Anne5Golly, Jean Theobalt4, Jean Pierre3, Josephi2,Petrus1) was born April 11, 1873 in Castroville, Medina Co., Texas, and died June 24, 1931 in Castroville, Medina Co., Texas. He married Alvina Marie Tuerpe October10, 1900 in San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas. She was born September 13, 1877 in Rio Medina, Medina Co., Texas/MedinaCo., TX, and died March 24, 1977 in San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas.
Notes for William Leo Brieden:
He and Alvina lived with his parents and farmed andworked the land that his mother (Theresa Pichot) inherited from herfather. The 80 acres East of the MedinaRiver. William's only brother Henry diedfrom a gun shot wound, February 7, 1900, he was 31 years old. This left William only to tend to thefarming.
They weregoing on a hunting trip, William, Henry, Albert Pichot (William's Uncle) andFritz Tuerpe (William's brother-in-law, Alvina brother). They where in a wagon and Albert was sittingin front, William, Henry and Fritz sitting in the back of the wagon. Everyone unloaded their guns and then theywrapped them up in the bedding in the back of the wagon. They were way outalready on the road and they were getting tired of sitting there and theyeither moved their bedding around or hit a bump in the road when all of asudden a gun went off. It hit Henry inthe back. The doctor said the bullet waslogged in his spine and there was really nothing they could do. They went backto Uvalde where Albert and Mary Pichot lived, he stayed for maybe threemonths. Then his mother wanted him home,so they moved him home, he lived 3 years? (Alvina 1973)
WilliamBrieden was a heavy smoker and would order his tobacco leaves from some companyand they would send it to him in bulk. He would lay them out and dry it in the sun. Then he would take it and remove the stemsand rub it between his hands to make it fine to be able to roll it in thelittle papers to smoke. He would keepall his things up on the fireplace mantel. He would get up during the night when could not sleep to smoke acigarette (Laura Brieden 1996).
When theriver was high people would be unable to cross. There was a crossing point about were the bridge is now. They would come by the Briedens house andGrandpa Brieden, Leopold, and Papa (William) would ferry them across. They would straddle the buggy across the topof the boat. Then they would come backand pick up the passengers and take them across (Carrie Brieden 1977). 6 people could fit in the boat. Grandpa Brieden (Joseph) and his brother Leopold(or Uncle Henry?, Papa's brother) built it out of cypress trees. It was very heavy and it would not turnover. When Richy and Leonard's friendwould come over they would try, but could never tip it (Carrie Brieden 1973).
WilliamBrieden died August 4, 1924 (June 24, 1931). He was horned by a bull there on the place. Carrie had gotten married and moved toDevine, she just had her first baby Vivian. Alvina (his wife) was over helping Carrie when it happened. The bull was de horned, but there were stillsome of the horn left. He was going totie the bull up in a shed at night so he would not get out. He would put a chain around the horns. The bull bucked him with the horns and threwhim up against the wooden pen. Alvinacame home and Laura (the youngest child) went to help Carrie with the newbaby. Alvina rapped up his chest, but hewould not go to the doctor. They thinkhe had broken a rib and it possibly damage a lung. He was in bed until he died. Everyone tried and tried, to convince him togo to the doctor, but he would not go. One Sunday Leonard came out and convinced him to go, probably aboutthree weeks before he died. Dr.Williamson did send some stuff into the lab but no one really ever heardresults. He was spitting up something. That left the two youngest children, Richyand Laura, at home with their mother Alvina and William's mother, TheresaBrieden (Laura Brieden 1996).
No onereally kept up with the farming and ranching after William Died. Richy tried to farm, but could not reallykeep the farm and ranching going. Hefinally went out and started doing other work. Some of the land was sold to the DeCocks and Karms (Laura Brieden 1996).

Notes for Alvina Marie Tuerpe:
Her parents settled in the Haby settlement, the RioMedina area. She went to school in Rio Medina where the RioMedina store is now located, San Geronimo School (Photo pg 36 library1898-1899). Alvina went to school untilshe was 16 years old. Both of herparents were Lutheran and they went to the Lutheran church in Castroville(Alvina Brieden 1973).
She had 3 older brothers, Alvina was the baby. She was 10 years younger than the youngestbrother. Henry, Fritz, and Albert, 10,12, 14 when she was born. As soon as shestarted to walk she did everything she could to keep up with her olderbrothers. She loved to horse back ride.
She met William Brieden in school. He lived with his parents in Castroville onthe Medina River. William Brieden wasCatholic religion, all the Briedens were. People were not against them getting married, but they had to getmarried by the county judge because they were of different religions. They were married in San Antonio on Oct. 10,1900. William and Alvina took a wagon toSan Antonio and returned to live with William's parents, Joseph Brieden andTheresa Pichot until they both died. Theresa was 90 when she died, Joseph died 7 years before her.
(they cant stay in the house all alone, movedto San Antonio between New Years and Christmas moved to San Antonio in 1900until got married in San Antonio??).
They had 5 children: Alice, Carrie (Carolina), Leonard, Richy, and Laura, all within about 10years. All 5 children were baptized andreceived communion as Catholics. Thefamily got along fine, Alvina went to the Lutheran Church, William went to theCatholic Church. All the children wereraised in the Catholic Church. Alvinadid start going to the Catholic Church but not until later.
It was when one of her grandchildren were makingtheir first communion in 1951, there was a party. She called all the children together at theparty to tell them she wanted to become Catholic (Father Lenzen), she was 73years old at the time. They were allvery happy and she was then baptized. Arliss Schott and Patsy Brieden were her sponsors (Alvina 1973).
Alvina and all five children were traveling in thecarriage being pulled by mules. Suddenlytwo bicyclers came by and scared the mules. This turned the carriage around, broke the harness and the mules gotloose. Alice kept wanting to jump out,she was always the scared one. Her Mama,Alvina, kept saying, "Keep seated! Keep seated!" They finallyslowed down and stopped at the bottom of the hill. They had to walk back home, Alvina was notworried, she knew the mules would be come back. They borrowed a carriage from the Noonans because William was expecting to meet thefamily at Alvina's parent's home, Richard and Carolina Tuerpe, he had gone inahead to pickup some grain and feed for the cows. Alvina really knew how to drive the team andshe did all the way. Willam was gettingworried and when they did arrive, he noticed they had a different team andcarriage. The family told him what hadhappened (Carrie 1977, Laura 1996).
The familywould have to cross the river to go to the doctor, or fetch the doctor (Dr.Fitzsimon) and they would have to pick him up and bring him across. When Laura was still a baby, she becamesick. He checked her over and toldAlvina, she had diphtheria. He told herto take her home, if she lives through the night, she will be okay. It was probably the longest night of Alvina'slife, but Laura made it (Laura Brieden Mangold 1996).
Carrie andAlice were at the river one time and Alice was trying to punch a log away. The stick slipped and she fell in theriver. Carrie ran to the house yelling,"Mama! Mama! Alice fell in the river! Alice fell in the river!" Alvina ran back with Carrie and she reached alimb to Alice and pulled her out. Noneof the girls could swim, only the boys learned how (Carrie Brieden Schott1977).
Alvina didmost of the cooking along with working out in the fields. It was rare that Theresa Brieden cooked. The children would bring the cows in from thepasture and milk them. Some householdchores consisted of turning the separator to separate the milk from the creamand washing dishes in a dish pan, since they did not have running water in thehouse. There was a well, a windmill anda tank near the home. The water wouldhave to be pumped. When the girls wereolder they helped wash the clothes. Theywould boil the white clothes in a large kettle. Hominy was also made in large kettle, itwas cooked until soft and the hulls would come off. The hominy was then wash it real good. The family would also make their own cottagecheese (Schott 1977).
Alvina'schildren loved cream and molasses with a little bread. "When Grandma Brieden would go visiting,Mama (Alvina) would get a little bowl of cream out for us. She would say, 'Hurry before grandma getshome.' It was a real treat. Grandma Brieden rarely allowed us to eat thecream or butter, only on special occasions. Grandma Brieden went visiting a lot. She was always making Grandpa hook up the carriage for her. Along with her dairy good that she wentaround town selling, she also had a large vegetable garden. We would have to haul water out there in thewagon. It was pretty rocky outthere." (Schott 1977)
They wouldalways cross the river to go into town, even to go to the frequent dances heldat Wernette's Garden, top story of the Tondre Store, or in the townsquare. "Grandpa Brieden and PapaBuilt steps over the fence so we would not have to go over or under thefence. We would take a lantern with usand leave it on the steps so we could see our way home. Mama would always take Alice and I and wewould always stay till the end. Laterwhen Leonard was 15 or 16 Mama stayed home and he started to go with us. Mama would make us dresses. Always a new one for the big dances, especially the 25th Celebrations. Lotsof lace, puffy sleeves, and a sash. Wewould were patent leather shoes with a strap, usually flat heals. Mama would dress Alice in blue and me(Carrie) in pink. In the Winter it wouldbe the dark blues and reds, and then in Summer it would be the lightershades." (Schott 1977)
TheBriedens would have all kinds of people staying in the house with them duringthe 25th Celebrations. It usually wenton for several days. The family wouldhave to kill a handful of chickens to feed everyone.
The youngest brother, Albert, moved to Ballingerafter he got married, then he moved back down to Atascosa. Henry lived in San Antonio, and Fritz helived out in Denton.
Carrie & August went to Elsie and Alfreds to meetthe boys after they got out of the Service - They road a train to Calif withthe Baumls

He was born July 22, 1875 in Oakwood, LeonCo., Texas, and died Abt. 1956 in Arlington, Texas.
Notes for Lilly Elizabeth Brieden:
Lilly was the sixth of nine children born toCatherine Pichot and Leopold Brieden between the years 1871 and 1885. One of the family stories to come down to usabout her is that her parents allowed each of the older children who were inthe family when she was born to give their new baby sister a name. Then her mother named her Lilly because shewas "white as a lily". Thusher full name: "Lilly Lenora Mary Annie Elizabeth Brieden". This story was related by her daughter,Hylma (Looney) Riddle.
When we were little, our grandmother (we called her"Inday Looney") taught us a children's poem in German. This poem was taught to her by her father,Leopold Brieden, when she was a little girl. It was apparently something that he remembered his parents reciting tohim. They had brought their family tothe Castro Colony in Medina County, Texas, from their home in the Alsace regionof France. She would recite the poem tous in German, laced with the Alsatian dialect.
It sounded to us like this: "Ikleepty gross,
Ikleepty klein,
Ikleepty vee
Ein kleiny Shvine."
In German, it's: "Ichlieb' dich gross,
Ich lieb' dich klein,
Ich lieb' dich wie
Ein kleine Schwein."
Translated literally, it says: "I love you big,I love you small, I love you like a little pig."
Back before anyone had air conditioning, Inday had aunique way of cooling down rooms in her house during the heat of summer. In the rooms that she wanted to cool, shewould put up several strings like clotheslines a little above head height. Then she would drape wet cup towels over thestrings. She would then direct anelectric fan to blow air over the wet cup towels. The effect of the water evaporating from thewet towels would actually cool the room down. The difference would only be a matter of about 2 or 3 degrees, but on aday when it was over 100 degrees outside it felt wonderful to walk into hercooled living room.
Notes for Edward Hardin Looney:
Edward Hardin Looney was about five years old whenhis father died in 1879. His father,James W. Looney was almost 70. Edwardand his sister were sent to live with their half-brother Fredrick B. Looney.Their mother, Mary Rushing, "a little red-haired school teacher" haddied soon after the birth of Ed's sister, Frances Mae, in 1876. Fredrick B. Looney was almost 40 years olderthan Ed. The presence of a tinyhalf-brother and half-sister in the household apparently created a lot ofresentment. Their mother was youngerthan their oldest half-sister. Severalof Ed's and Mae's half brothers and sisters lived in the same household at thetime. Fredrick B. was a doctor and Edcalled him "Bud Doc". Fredrick's wife was Martha Ann Arnett and Ed called her "SisAnnie". A half sister, SusanLooney, was "Sis Sue", and another half brother, William RileyLooney, was called "Bud Will". He may have called them "Bud" and "Sis" because hecouldn't yet say "brother" and "sister" when he first knewthem. Ed's older half brothers andsisters called him "Eli" and called Frances Mae "Fannie". Ed and Mae are referred to in the 1880 U. S.Census by those names. He was known to some of us as "IndaddyLooney".
Ed was not treated well. He was evidently punished often and brutally. His punishment was usually being picked up by the scruff of the neck and theseat of his pants and having his head banged against the wall. When he was about 10 years old he ran awayand went to work as a water boy on the railroad. He never returned home but hewould leave messages secretly to his sister in a gate post at their house inOakwood, Leon Co., Texas.
He went on to become a railroad engineer for the oldTrinity and Brazos Valley Railroad, which later became part of the GreatBurlington Route. In the early 1900'she was sent to Mexico to assist in training and organizing the fledglingMexican railway system.
Teague, Texas, in Freestone County, was a hub for therailroad systems running through the central part of the state. After the birth of their second child, Hylma,Ed and Lilly (Brieden) made their home there. They raised their family in Teague until 1920 when they moved to FortWorth, Tarrant Co., Texas
Ed had a bad temper. On one occasion a federal inspector climbed up onto Ed's locomotive tolook around. Ed didn't take kindly tothis and kicked the man off the locomotive, knocking some of his teeth out. For this he was fired and was denied his retirement pension from theBrotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
Ed, or "Indaddy Looney" as we knew him, wasa Christian Scientist. At about the ageof 60, his feet got tangled in some vines while walking through hisgarden. He fell and broke his hip. He refused any medical help on religiousgrounds. His hip never mended and he washobbled for the rest of his life. Hecould never walk again without the help of a crutch or a cane. He refused to stay at home and become aburden to his wife, Lilly (Brieden), so he moved out of his house and into theHome for Aged Masons in Arlington, Texas. He spent the last 20 or so years of his life in the Masonic Home. He is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in FortWorth, Texas.
(The information on the life of E. H. Looney is froma letter he wrote in 1948 to his son, Howard, and discussions with my motherHylma (Looney) Riddle, my sister, Betty Jo (Riddle) Blair, and my brother EddieJ. Riddle.)

Carolina Wilhelmina "Carrie"9Brieden (William Leo8, Theresa7 Pichot, Regina6Haller, Marie Anne5 Golly, Jean Theobalt4, Jean Pierre3,Josephi2, Petrus1) was born January 02, 1903 in Castroville,Medina Co., Texas, and died December 23, 1993 in Castroville, Medina Co.,Texas. She married August RudolphSchott, Jr. May 01, 1923 in St. Louis Church, Castroville, Medina Co.,Texas, son of August Schott and Anna Poerner. He was born July 20, 1898 in Devine, Medina Co., Texas, and died March07, 1983 in Castroville, Medina Co., Texas.
Notes for Carolina Wilhelmina "Carrie"Brieden:
When she was a child, friends would come down to edgeof river and yell for them to come getthem. They would all go boat riding on aSunday afternoon. They would take aquilt and knock down wasp nest and then duck under the quilt. All the kids friends loved to come over andgo riding in the boat.
I washolding a calf while Mama was milking it's mother. I tied the rope around my waist while I waswaiting and was playing with a stalk of corn silk. Suddenly the cow started to go into the penand the calf followed, dragging me through the pen. One of the Pichot cousins was loading hay sohe jumped down and over the fence and caught the calf.
I metAugust at a dance I would guess. I hadseen him before at church. He was nicelooking and dressed well. He also playedin a band at dances sometime, he played the trumpet.
My daddydied, William Brieden, after I had gotten married. He was horned by a cow there on theplace. It was right after I had Vivian,we were still living in Devine. Mama wasover helping me when it happened. TheBull was de horned, but there were still some of the horn left. It butted him up against the wooden pen. Mama did rap his chest up, but he would notgo to the doctor. Everyone tried andtried, but he would not go. He eventuallygot sick and died. Aug. 4th, 1924.
Mama liveduntil she was 99 years old, she died March 24, 1977. We always had a pretty large family reunionto celebrate her birthday every year. They still try to have the reunion around the time of her birthday(September 13, 1877). (Carrie BriedenSchott 1977)
The familywould get together for pecan thrashing. Your Dad and the uncles would thrash the trees with long poles to knockthe pecans down and then everyone would help pick them up. We had lots of pecans trees at the house hereand even when I was growing up, Papa planted a handful of pecan trees down bythe river.
SaturdaysI would make homemade noodles. I wouldhave them all dried and be cutting them to start cooking when you would come inwith your Dad. Even raw with all theflour over them, you would have to taste one. And of course you always found your way to the cookie jar. It was usually filled with molasses and sugarcookies ready for you to eat.
