Descendants of Moses Riddle

Generation No. 1

      1. Moses1 Riddle was born Abt. 1716 in Virginia(?). He married Mary Collins Abt. 1739 in Virginia(?), daughter of Thomas Collins. She was born Abt. 1720 in Virginia(?).

Notes for Moses Riddle:
Moses and his wife Mary are listed on the tax rolls of Montgomery County, Virginia, as "Indian" at times and "Mulato" at other times. According to Mary Hill, of Provo, Utah, they were probably Melungeon, a variable mix of Portuguese, American Indian, Turkish, and/or Moorish, and may have been the source of the tradition that there is Indian blood in the Riddle family. There may also be African blood in the mix. Ms. Hill says that often in colonial times if a person's skin pigmentation was darker than the white of a pure European, he was often referred to as mulatto ("mulato") whether he had any African blood or not. Much of the information on the children of Moses and Mary Riddle, particularly William, is from "SAGA OF A SOUTHERN LOYALIST - William Riddle of Virginia and North Carolina - His Ancestors and Descendants" by Mary Hill, published by the author, Provo, Utah, 1998.

Recent discussions on the genealogy of the Riddle family indicate that Moses may not be the father of William Riddle of Virginia (the Tory). He may have been a brother or some other close relative. More research is needed to determine his relationship.

Moses's father may have been William Riddle/Riddell who "married" a Monacan Indian woman near present day Charlottesville, Virginia. An Indian village has been unearthed by University of Virginia archaeologists nearby and may be her home. The Monacan Indians were contemporaries of the Powhatan Indians, the tribe of Pocahontas, of Tidewater Virginia. The Powhatans and the Monacans may have been related.
