Samuel Wymore for whom Wymore Nebraska was named, was a resident of Lancaster Township, near Huron, in the 1850's and early 60's, and ran a sawmill by horsepower, about 3 miles north of Lancaster, in 1858. Mr. Wymore sold his first bill of lumber to Capt. Robert White for $100.00 in gold and at that time, it was more money than Wymore had ever seen at one time. He was so nervous that during the following night, he could not sleep and continually stirred the fire in the stove so that he could count the money from the light it made. Wymore was uneducated, he could neither read nor write and he was said to be worth over $150,000 before 1875.

Weekly Wymorean-Feb. 23, 1895-Samuel Wymore arrived in this city last Monday, Feb. 11, 1895 from Wellington, in the Walker River Valley, Nevada, where he has a small farm of 5,920 acres or 37 quarter sections. He looks rugged and hearty and says that the country is good enough for him and that hehas no desire to return to Nebraska to make his home. On his ranch he has over 400 acres of alfalfa meadow which they cut 2 or 3 times a year and get from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 tons per acre at each cutting. He has over 50 milch cows and about 100 head of horses. He has the upper charter on the Walker River which not only gives him fine mill power, but affords an abundant supply of water to irrigate. They are sure of a crop every year, but without the water, the land would be useless for farming purposes.-The Reporter.

Death of Samuel Wymore
Samuel Wymore, founder of this city, died at his home just south of town, Sunday morning. He was in his usual good health & spirits on Friday. He had been up town trading, starting home in the evening. He was found wandering in the railroad yards in a dazed, blinded condition. He was taken home and given every attention, but stricken with paralysis and sunk rapidly until the end. The deceased was 73y 1m old. He was born in Steuben County Indiana, settling in Gage County, nearly 50 years ago and purchased the ground where Blue Springs now stands. In 1868, he homesteaded a 1/4 section of land, where Wymore is now located. It was his action in presenting the Burlington RR or the old Burlington/Missouri, with land for shops, yards and depot, that made Wymore. Funeral was held at home at 10:00 o'clock am and at the Baptist Church at 10:30, Saturday morning.
Weekly Arbor State-December 25, 1908
Death of An Old Resident...
Samuel Wymore, founder of this city, died at his home, about 1 mile south of town, at 3:00 o'clock Sunday morning following a stroke of paralysis.
He started home from town Friday night and seemingly became dazed and by the time his son could get him home, he was in a very serious condition. Dr. Gafford was called immediately and everything possible was done for his relief but he was stricken soon after reaching home and was unconscious all the time until the death angel came.
Mr. Wymore was one of the pioneer residents of Gage County. He was born November 20, 1835 in Parke County Indiana and was 73 years of age at the time of his death.
With his parents, when a boy, he drifted about overland from Indiana to Iowa and Missouri and thence to Kansas. He returned to Daviess Co Missouri in 1856, where in August of that year, he was married to Isabella L. Scott.
In April 1858, Mr. Wymore and wife drove to Pawnee County Nebraska. His conveyance was a farm wagon to which he had hitched one yoke of oxen, a cow and stag, a drove of yearling heifers and a pair of two year old steers. After improving this land, his house and contents was twice destroyed by prairie fires, which were quite common in those days.
They took up land near Pawnee City NE. In 1861, he sold his farm and went down to Kansas to assist his father. A year later he returned to Pawnee County and bought land and lived there two years, sold his property and removed to Missouri. Before going to Missouri, Mr. Wymore bought the present town site of Blue Springs Ne in 1861. The consideration for this quarter section was a second hand farm wagon and $12.50 to boot.
He returned from Missouri two years later and took up a homestead, the SW 1/4 of Section 21 in Wymore Township and a little later bought the original townsite where Wymore City now stands. This was in the year 1868. After a residence of eight years upon his homestead, he had purchased sufficient land to swell the total of his possessions up to 438 1/2 acres.
His experience with oxen and heifers probably impressed upon his mind the advantage of Railroads and when in 1880, the B&M Railroad was looking for a townsite, he donated them 1 1/2 miles of "right of way" in addition to an undivided half interest in 160 acres of land. In addition to this he gave the block of ground where our present high school building stands and several other locations for churches and public institutions.
In 1877, the deceased sold 38 1/2 acres that had cost him $3.00, and received 900 acres in exchange. When the town of Wymore was platted, he owned 160 acres within the city limits and this of course was laid out with the rest. The sale of town lots, made him quite wealthy for those days and he at once proceeded to build up the town. It was largely his money that built the "Touzalin Hotel", the "Blue Valley Bank", of which he was president, the "Wymore Building & Loan Association", and the Wymore & Blue Springs Railway.
In 1892 the population got too dense and he moved to Nevada and bought over 5000 acres of land under an irrigation ditch. This venture proved unprofitable and in 1899, he returned to Wymore, where he has since resided.
The deceased was one of those sturdy pioneers, that has made Nebraska one of the greatest states in the union and Gage County, one of the best counties in the state. Through all his younger days, he never had the advantage of our public schools.
He was a better hand with the ax than the pen and was more at home with hard work than in society. He was always industrious, always frugal, always honest and always willing "to do as he would be done by". He made and retained a host of friends who cherish the recollections of his friendship and sympathize with the family. An appropriate tablet to the memory of this busy and strenuous life, would be "At Rest".
He leaves to mourn, his faithful wife, Isabelle, who has stood by his side, sharing in every hardship, participating in adverse fortune and finally helping him enjoy his successes.Seven children were born to this union, four girls and three boys, all of whom are dead except two----Samuel Wymore, Jr of Granger Idaho and Mrs J B Rutherford of Wymore Nebraska
The funeral will be held at 10:00 o'clock Saturday morning at the Baptist Church, Rev. Taylor of Blue Springs, preaching the sermon. Interment will be made in the Wymore Cemetery. [This is an error, as Sam is buried in the Blue Springs, Ne Cemetery, refer Cemetery records and tombstone].
