The Cross Family's Connection to Patawomeck Tribe
Welcome to my CROSS CONNECTION to POCAHONTAS website! This website is the focus of my research of Native American bloodlines: Cross, Edwards, and Parker. The focus also include the research results of several proven Indian bloodlines that are: Rolfe, Bolling, Murray, Buchannon, Cross, Thornton, Gray & Cunningham. Our tribal heritage is Patawomeck and Pamunkey. Our native ancestor, Pocahontas, was the daughter of Patawomeck tribe's chief's sister & their village was in Stafford county, Va. Pocahontas was the daughter of the powerful Pamunkey tribe's chief, Wahunsonacawk from the banks of the river in Wimoccomicco, Virginia (known as Tsenacoma) alongside James River in Henrico county. For more info on Patawomeck tribe, go to the source on Wikipedia website at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patawomeck Pocahontas's mother was from Patawomeck tribe. Matrilineally, Pocahontas was a Patawomeck. One genealogist from North Carolina claimed that Pocahontas's clan was called "Medicine". She was said to be a medicine woman as well as tobacco priestess. Her other name was Matoaka (White Feather). Matoaka meant playful & mischievious. English observors described her as "wanton" & "hard to control" according to one Pocahontas website. I find that very offensive. Women in her tribe were held in very high esteem for they were regarded as lifegivers and as equals. Their leadership qualities & matrilineal clan roles were respected. Usually, it was always the clan mothers who decided who was worthy of character to be become a werowance (chief). Pocahontas's first husband was Kocum. They had three children (one boy and two girls) Two of them were twins. They lived at one of the two villages in Stafford county, Virginia. Pocahontas was later kidnapped on the ship & taken to Jamestown where she became pregnant with son Thomas. The father was Thomas Dale, not John Rolfe. Pocahontas was pregnant with her son, Thomas when she married one of Thomas Dale's employees, John Rolfe. He married her in April 1614 after she was baptized as a Christian. They settled as a married couple living on Pocahontas's land in Varina, Virginia alongside James River that were given as wedding gifts by Chief Wahunsonacawk and his tribal council (Source: Pocahontas as Medicine Woman, Spy, Diplomat.." by Paula Gunn Allen) Pocahontas gave birth to Thomas who was born in January 1615 at Captain John Smith's plantation known as John Smith Plantation. Thomas Dale later left for West Indies b& soon died there from illness. John Rolfe was the stepfather. Today, there are 2 groups of descendants of Pocahontas. The first group of people are the descendants of three older children from Pocahontas & her first marriage to Kocum who still live in Stafford county, Virginia. They are known by their surnames that are common in Stafford county, Virginia: Berry and Newton. For more info on the surnames of the descendants of Pocahontas and her 1st husband, Kocum, go to the source at: http://patawomeckindians.org/index.html The 2nd group of people are descendants of Pocahontas &Thomas Dale. These descendants never lived with Pocahontas's Patawomeck tribe. For this reason, they are better known as Pocahontas's other people. Pocahontas's son, Thomas, married outside of his native heritage. | The Cross Family's Connection to Patawomeck Tribe Updated November 21, 2010 |
