Notes for Person Franklin Pittman:
My dad!... he and I were very close. I went with him everywhere. I can remember that on Saturdays we would go and pay the bills that were due for the week. Sometimes that would mean that we would go to a coal company on Pettigrew St. in Durham to pay for the coal needed to heat the coal stove in our house on Elizabeth Street. After the errands were done we would go to see a movie at the Uptown Theatre or go fishing at the Eno River. My dad worked at the American Tobacco Co. and when he would come home from work I would meet him and we would go through this verbal game before he would give me five cent to go get some M & M's. He would have to take a bath before I could get a hug because I was allergic to tobacco.

My dad was not a healthy man. He would always have some medical problems or hospitalization every year. It got to the point that I hated to see February come. He always seem to have some problem occur in February. He later died in February.

He loved his family, he worked hard, and loved to go fishing. Sometimes I think he loved watching other people fish more than actually fishing. I remember we would go to the beach every year for vacation and he and mom would go fishing on the piers. He always found a lot of time to go up and down the pier to see what others were catching. It was a good thing that mother liked to fish also or we would have never had enough to cook.

Daddy, never had much formal education. I believe he only went through the sixth or eight grade. His daddy died young and being the eldest he had to take responsibility for his mother and the other children.

Notes for Margaret Elma King:
My mother was very smart, strong in character, and yet a simple person. She was a hard worker, which most likely caused a lot of her health problems.

She worked for a short period of time at the American Tobacco Co., she left American and went to work for Sears & Roebuck. She later became the department manager for fabric department. This was a perfect place for her to work. She was an excellent seamstress. She could make anything! Most of mine and my sister's clothing was made by her. After the death of my father she re-married to a very nice man in our church, Romie D. Lane, who had lost his wife. He and mother retired and moved to Carolina Beach and stayed there for several years. But mother missed the grandchildren and they sold the place and moved back to Durham. She went back to work as a department manager for Kings Department Store and later was a manager for the Piece Goods Store in Durham.

She had a great deal of problems carrying children and had a very hard time giving birth. She was advised never to have another child, but for my sake I'm glad she did! She had to have a hysterectomy at an early age. She had gallbladder, heart, kidney, and vertebrae problems. She had kidney, spinal, and gallbladder surgery during her life time. When she was 75 she complained of severe pain in her neck and had surgery on the vertebras' in her neck. She continued to experience pain and developed an inflammation on her back right shoulder blade. The doctors felt that this was a muscle spasm due to the surgery, she begin to have drug reactions and was hospitalized. During this time another doctor was called in to give his opinion of the inflammation. He did a biopsy and it was positive, she was given only a few months to live it she had treatment. Since the quality of that time would not be as she felt productive and without pain, she elected to forgo the treatments. She was given only a short time to live. Seven days after her biopsy she passed away. Even in her home going she stayed strong and was an inspiration to all who knew her. Even her doctor, who was hard nosed and had no bedside manner, changed. Nurses from other areas came to see the lady who had made such a change in her doctor.

SHE WAS A WONDERFUL MOTHER!
