NATHANIEL THORNTON Senr. Will, Sampson County, North Carolina
Dated December 24, 1821, Probated February Court 1822

In the name of God. Amen I Nathaniel Thornton senr. of the State of North
Carolina & County of Sampson being weak in body but of sound & perfect mind
and memory, blessed be God, do this 8th day December in the year of our Lord
one thousand Eight hundred & twenty one Make publish ratify establish &
ordain this & no other my last Last will and testament. As touching my
wordly Estate that it has pleased Almighty God to bless me with in this life
I despose of it in manner & form following.

(Viz) Item first my will is that all my just debts of all kinds be justly
satisfied & paid.

Item I give to my wife Millie Thornton as much of my crop stock & provisions
as will be sufficient for her & her Family's support one year to be laid up
by my Executors hereafter named.

Item I lend to my Dear and well beloved wife Millie Thornton my plantation
whereon I now live beginning at the road where it crosses Crawfod's Branch &
runs with the road to when the Ditch leaves the road thence with the ditch &
Easterly course to the turn of s'd Ditch then with the other course of
s(ai)d Ditch to the mouth of the lane thence a direct coarse to a corner in
a slash of the thick pond near Sion Hill's ditch thence with my line to the
uppercorner to the uppercorner (repeats self) of my plantation joining
Wright Thornton's plantation then with said Wright Thornton's to said
Crawford's branch thence down the meander of the same to the beginning Which
land is before stated. I lend my wife during her natural lifetime Also I
lend to my wife during her natural life as much of my Household & Kitchen
furniture plantation Tools also as much of my stock cattle horses hogs sheep
& fowls of every kind as will be sufficient for her use to be laid up by my
executors for her further maintanance. Also I lend to my Wife during her
natural life time six negroes by the names of Ned, Vilet, Cinthy, Edith &
Calvin & Patience

Item I give & bequeath to my beloved son Benjamin Sims Thornton all my lands
that lies below the road & on the south side of the lines that is the lower
boundaries of my wife's lines to him & his heirs & assigns forever Also I
give to my aforesaid son fifty dollars to him and his heirs (?vc?).

Item I give & bequeath to my beloved son Uriah Thornton my plantation
whereon I now live beginning & running with the lines laid out to my wife as
far as to the corner in the slash of the thick pond near Sion Hill's Ditch
thence with my own lines to the corner on a pine thence a north course to a
small maple in the west prong of Kill Swamp thence with my own line to
Wright Thorntons line thence with said Wright Thornton's line to the corner
near the upper corner of my own fence thence with his other line & my own
line to the said Crawfords Branch. Thence down the meanders of the said
branch to the main road the beginning To him his heirs & assigns forever
also I give to my aforesaid Uriah Thornton fifty dollars to him and his
Heirs (?vc?).

Item I give & bequeath to my beloved son Samuel Sugs Thornton all the upper
part of my land beginning at the above named corner in the slash of the
thick pond near Sion Hill's Ditch thence with my own line to the corner on a
pine in a pond. Thence with my other line to the corner on a maple in the
west prong of Kill swamp the beforenamed corner of Uriah Thornton's thence
with Wright Thornton's & my own line nearly a Northeast course to Thomas
Thornton senr. line in Wayne County thence with his line nearly a Northwest
course to a deviding line between myself & s'd Thomas Thornton sr. Thence
with my own lines to a sweet gum in the Bee Tree branch David Thorntons
corner Thence with my own David Thornton's George Denning's Turnifolds
Wood's Sion Hills lines to the beginning To him his heirs & assigns forever.

Item I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Susanne Thornton fifty
dollars to her heirs and assigns forever.

Item I give and bequeath to the lawful heirs of my beloved son Thomas
Thornton Junr. four hundred and seventy eight acres of land lying in Wayne
County on the main waters of Falling Creek. To them their heirs & assigns
forever & further my Will is that all the residue & remaining part of my
property not given and divided away as before stated to be sold by my
Executors on a credit of six months & after paying all my just debts if
there is any money left in the hands of my Executors from the sale of s'd
property two thirds of said money to be equally between my six youngest
children namely to wit Millie, Joseph, Samuel Suggs, Benjamin Sims, Susanna
& Uriah the other the other (repeated self) third & remaining part of s'd
money to be equally devided between my nine eldest children, to wit, The
lawful heirs of Sarah Lee, The lawful heirs of Pheribee Lee, David, Thomas,
Nathaniel, Elizabeth, Christian, Eldridge, & Bershaby & furthermore my Will
is that after the death of my wife Millie Thornton all the perishable
property remaining that I lent her to be sold & two thirds of of the money
arising from the sale of said property to be equally divided between my six
younger children to wit Millie, Joseph, . Sam'l Sugs, Benj. Sims - Susanna &
Uriah. The other third part to be Equally divided between the lawful heirs
of my daughters Sarah Lee, Pherebee Lee David Thomas Nathaniel Elizabeth
Christiana Eldridge & Bershaby. I do hereby make constitute appoint
establish & ordain my son Eldridge Thornton & Samuel Lee Executors of this
my last will & testiment In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand &
seal the day and date first above written. Signed Sealed & Delivered by the
s'd Nathaniel Thornton Senr. in the presence of

N.B The eighth Item wherein I gave to the lawful Heirs of my son Thomas
Thornton Junr. four hundred & seventy Eight acres of land lyining(sp) in
Wayne County on the main waters of Falling Creek I alter and dispose of to
his use in the following manner (to wit) All the before mentioned Land
divided to my aforesaid son Thomas Thornton Junr.s Heirs to be sold by my
Executors on a credit of six months & all his just debts paid out of the
money arising from the sale of said land the balance & remaining part- (if
any) to be equally divided between the Lawful Heirs of my aforesaid son
Thomas Thornton - To this last Item I again set my hand & seal the 24th
December 1821- Signed, sealed, and acknowledged in the presence of Tho's
