I have been researching the Lincolnshire Emmison family for 7 years. I have come to a dead end with Cornelius Emmison (born 1808).
Cornelius Emmison was consistent in the Census returns in stating that he was born at Timberland, c.1809, but no trace can be found of his Baptism. The Parish Register shows that Cornelius Emmison and his Wife Elizabeth Abbat did indeed have a Son baptised in 1809, but his name at Baptism was given as Thomas. No trace can be found in the 1851 Census of a Thomas Emmison claiming to have been born at Timberland, and neither can a burial be found that would equate to a birth in c.1809 for a Thomas Emmison. Furthermore, the entry in the Parish Register was inserted after the date of Baptism, because it is inserted in between other entries. Either, the Rector realised that he had forgotten to record the Baptism and inserted it at a later date with the wrong name, or Thomas, for whatever reason, decided to use the name Cornelius instead of his Baptismal name - possibly in memory of his Father.
It is also significant that the Baptism of Thomas was omitted from the annual return of Baptism's, in Bishops Transcripts, so it would appear that the late addition of the record in the Parish Register was after the end of 1809 when these Bishops Transcripts would have been compiled from the Parish Register entries.
In view of the above, the Baptism of Thomas is assumed to be that of Cornelius, and that date has been entered against Cornelius in the family tree.
Any information on this family or information on the parents of Corenlius would be much appreicated.
I also have reason to believe that his son John Cooper Emmison emigrated to Adelaide in South Australia in the 1850's but have been unable to trace his whereabouts.
