Our grandfather on my mother}s side, William Wiederhoft, was first generation American, whose family imigrated from Prussia in the 1880s. Our grandmother}s family on our mother}s side, the Rockwoods, can be traced back to Massachusttes in the 1700s and the Hartwells of Concord, Massachussettes, who landed in the Boston area in 1635 from England. Our grandmother}s mother}s family, the Mulls, also hail from Germany (Wurttemberg)in the 1880s. Both the Wiederhofts and the Rockwoods were among the first settlers in the new State of Michigan. They were hardy, young men who came with their families to clear the forest land for farming, without the help of modern machinery.
Our father}s family, the Holdings, I have been able to trace back to Queen Anne}s Co., Maryland in the 1760s, and before that to John Holding (1700-1776) in New York. Many of the Holdings enlisted in the Revolutionary War Against the British. Several brothers then migrated to Kentucky, then their offspring migrated North through Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan. Originally I suspect they came from Lancashire or Shropshire, England, as so many Holdings did.
I continue to search for my late husband}s ancestors in the Basque Country of Spain.
