Descendants of Martin KEELER

Generation No. 2

2. HANNAH7 KEELER (MARTIN6, JOSEPH5, JOSEPH4, JOSEPH3, SAMUEL2, RALPH1) She married SYLVESTER CLYNE March 29, 1839 in Northumberland Cty, Ont., Canada13.

Notes for H
ANNAH KEELER:
Hopefully through further research, I can confirm Hannah is the daughter of Martin & Hannah Keeler. There is a Sylvanus Clyne with wife and 1 daughter under 16 yrs of age in the 1841 Cramahe Census, but I cannot find a record of the family subsequently. However, in the 1851 Census an 12 yr old girl, Sarah Cline (sic), is living with the grandmother Hannah Keeler (Widow) and a number of other individuals. So, the connection is possible.

  Notes for SARAH CLYNE:
Sarah appears as an 11 yr old girl living with her grandmother, Hannah Keeler, in the 1851 Cramahe Twp census.

  Notes for JOHN TERRY ALEXANDER:
In the 1861 Cramahe Twp Census, Div. 2, p. 77 John, Sarah and the two children, Martha & Alfreda, are listed next to Charles & Ann (Keeler) Moore and Matthias & Elizabeth McCoy. The ages of the two children are confusing. It appears that Martha is ~6 and Alfreda ~1. So, it is hard to tell if Martha was born prior to marriage (1858) or if it is an error in the entry.

John & Sarah's wedding is recorded in the Northumberland County Marriage Register 1858 - 1869. However, nothing is documented about where they were born, ages, parents or witnesses. John was listed as residing in Brighton Twp and Sarah in Cramahe Twp.

3. MARTIN7 KEELER (MARTIN6, JOSEPH5, JOSEPH4, JOSEPH3, SAMUEL2, RALPH1) was born December 1798 in Rutland, Rutland County, VT, United States24, and died August 11, 1889 in Cramahe Twp, Northumberland County, Ont., Canada25. He married SUSANNAH CONNOR Abt. August 31, 1831 in Murray Twp, Northumberland County, Ont., Canada26. She was born Bet. 1798 - 1800 in Ontario27, and died Aft. 1871 in Ontario.

Notes for M
ARTIN KEELER:
In 1848, Martin was living on a sizable piece of land on Lot 31, Concession 1. It was a total of 50 acres valued at 4 pounds/acre, or $ 200. In the 1851 Agriculture Census for Cramahe Twp, p.2, Martin was still listed on the same piece of land. However, the property size had grown to 70 acres with 50 acres under cultivation. This was further delineated as 40 acres 'under crops' and 10 acres as 'pasture land.' The remaining 20 acres was still 'under wood or wild.' The 1850 Cramahe Twp census indicates he was a 'non-proprietor' of this land so I can only assume he lived on it as courtesy while the ownership remained with his cousin, Joseph A. Keeler's family. The 1861 Cramahe Census indicates that the family was living in a one story log house.

The 1871 Agriculture Census for Cramahe Twp, Sub-division A-2, provides a great deal of information about where Martin, and James, were living and farming. From Schedule No.'s 3 to 7 - Return of Real Estate, Land, Livestock and Forest, p. 10 the following is listed.

Martin Keeler was listed the owner of Lot 19, Concession 6. James Keeler's family and Maxwell Morsette's family were also living on the same Lot as "tenants." Mr. Morsette occupied 10 acres with 6 acres of "improved land." Martin was listed as residing on 50 acres, with 30 acres as "improved" land and 6 acres in pasture.

On the property were two houses, with one barn, two wagons/sleds, 2 ploughs/cultivators and 1 Fanning Mill. Neither James Keeler nor Maxwell Morsette are listed with their own homes, so I assume that they all lived between the two houses that Martin had built on the property.

In 1870, Martin had eight (8) acres of grain planted which produced: 20 bushels of fall Wheat, 100 bushels of Oats, 50 bushels of Rye, 50 bushels of Peas, 6 bushels of Buckwheat, and 25 bushels of Corn. Martin also had one (1) acre devoted to root crops which yielded 100 bushels of potatoes and 50 bushels of turnips.

Martin had a number of livestock, which included:

- 2 horses > 3 yrs old
- 4 milk cows
- 3 other horned cattle
- 6 sheep
- 5 swine

From this, he also indicated that in the last year, 2 sheep and 2 swine had been killed or sold for slaughter/export. Other items included in the listing for farm production included: 200 pounds of butter, 32 pounds of wool, 25 yards of home made cloth and flannel and 15 cords of fire wood.

By the 1881 Census, Martin was living with his son James and his family and Susan was not mentioned - presumed had passed away. Martin died of "old age" as noted on his death registry information in 1889. He was 90 years and 9 months old at his death.

No record of his, or Susan's, grave has been found.

Children of M
ARTIN KEELER and SUSANNAH CONNOR are:
  i.   DAVID8 KEELER, b. Abt. 1832, Cramahe Twp, Northumberland Cty, Ont., Canada.
  Notes for DAVID KEELER:
David appears in the 1851 Census as a "Laborer" living with the family. It is likely he was their son but the relationship is not indicated.

ii.   MARY KEELER, b. Abt. 1835, Ontario.
  Notes for MARY KEELER:
Mary does not appear in the 1861 Census with Martin & Susan. She was either married or had died by this time.

  More About MARY KEELER:
Religion: Wesleyan Methodist

  iii.   ALVIRA KEELER, b. February 06, 1836, Cramahe Twp, Northumberland Cty, Ont., Canada34; d. September 09, 1859, Castleton, Cramahe Twp, Northumberland Cty, Ont., Canada34,35; m. OLIVER WOLFRAIM, March 30, 1852, Northumberland Cty, Ont., Canada36; b. Abt. 1830, Ontario37; d. November 16, 1904, Ontario.
  Notes for ALVIRA KEELER:
Alvira was born and died in Cramahe Twp near Castleton. She only lived a short time, it is likely impossible to prove she was the daughter of Martin & Susannah Keeler. However, all the children of Jos. & Octavia are known, so it is likely she was Martin & Susannah's daughter. Certainly, there are unknown children (going by the 1841 Census for Cramahe) for this couple.

The 1841 Cramahe Census:

Martin Keeler, total of 9 family members - we know as follows --

1 female > 16 yrs = Susannah
3 males < 16 yrs = James, William & David (likely)
1 male > 16 yrs = Martin
3 females < 16 yrs = Mary, Annie (?1842 birth) - so there is at least one, maybe two, girls not yet accounted for..

In the 1851 Cramahe Census, Elvira (sic) Keeler is listed as an 18 yr old servant working for Henry Blakley (sic) and family. This family lived next door to, or near, Martin Keeler for many years.

Her tombstone in Castleton Cemetery reads:

"Alvira, wife of Oliver Wolfraim"

The cemetery transcription records include the date of death as Sept 9, 1859 age 23 yrs, 7 mos and 3 days. She was interred with Hamlet & Frances (Brookes) Wolfraim, Jane Ingles Wolfraim & Fred Wolfraim.

iv.   JAMES KEELER, b. December 18, 1838, Colborne, Cramahe Twp, Northumberland County, Ont., Canada42,43,44; d. September 23, 1914, Bowmanville, Darlington Twp, Durham County, Ont., Canada45; m. (1) ADELINE BOOKHOUT, December 17, 1861, Cramahe Twp, Northumberland County, Ont., Canada46; b. Abt. 1845, Brighton Twp, Northumberland County, Ont., Canada; d. October 06, 1889, Cramahe Twp, Northumberland County, Ont., Canada47; m. (2) EMMA JANE ELLIS48, April 28, 1890, Castleton, Cramahe Twp, Northumberland County, Ont., Canada49; b. November 15, 1870, Cramahe Twp, Northumberland County, Ont., Canada50.
  Notes for JAMES KEELER:
James Keeler was approx. 76 yrs old at his death and was married twice. He lived on Liberty Street in Bowmanville in 1914 when he died. His grave stone indicates his year of birth as 1838 ? but the 1901 Cramahe Census provides the year as 1836.

In the Ontario Computerized Land Records Index, the following entry appears:

Keeler, Jas A. (from original document looks like "Jos." meaning Joseph] Cramahe Twp Lot Pt 31, Concession I, Date Id: S (=sale), Issue Date 1829/05/11, Trans Type S (=sale), Type FG CL (=Clergy) Deed NO, Archival RG Series 01 C1113, Reference: Vol. 001, Page 047. I believe the purchase, of 135 acres, was made by Joseph A. Keeler and that Martin Sr. was probably his uncle, and the land passed through the Keeler family.

Joseph Abbott is a noted son of Joseph Sr. one of the early settlers in the Cramahe (Colborne) area and who is credited with many philanthropies.

The 1871 Agriculture Census for Cramahe Twp, Sub-division A-2, provides a great deal of information about where James (and his father Martin Keeler), were living and farming. From Schedule No.'s 3 to 7 - Return of Real Estate, Land, Livestock and Forest, p. 10 the following is listed. Martin & James Keeler were both living on Lot 19 of Concession 6. James Keeler is listed as one of two "tenants," while his father, Martin, was the owner of the Lot. James is not allotted a specific amount of property. The only mention of his farm production is a reference to wood harvested: 250 cubic feet of White Square Pine, 100 Pine Logs and 15 cords of fire wood.

On the property were two houses, with one barn, two wagons/sleds, 2 ploughs/cultivators and 1 Fanning Mill. Neither James Keeler nor Maxwell Morsette (the other tenant on the same land) are listed with their own homes, so I assume that they all lived between the two houses that Martin had built on the property.

In 1896, James and his family were still living on Concession 6, Lot 19. The town area now called "Dundonald," about 12 miles north of Colborne, east of Castleton. He was farming 75 acres, with one house and barn on the property. In the 1901 Census, his neighbors on Lot 18 were Joseph Moore and Anson Ellis.

In Morrey's Directory 1908/9, Union Publishing Company's Farmer and Business Directory, Vol. XV, FC3095 F76 U 53, James is listed on p. 126 as a F = Freeholder of land, Concession 3, Lot 5, Darlington Twp, Durham Cty.
