"After Joseph's death his wife, Martha, married (2) Benjamin Spencer, a Clarendon Tory who took protection at Fort Ticonderoga in the summer of 1777 and died a few weeks later. Martha turned her house on North Grove Street in Rutland, VT, into a tavern and later married (3) David Osgood. Martha's children, all living in Canada, eventually quit-claimed the Rutland Tavern to Osgood with a life lease for their mother."

North Main Street Cemetery, Rutland VT
Row 13: "Osgood, Mrs. Martha, consort of Capt. David, d. March 9, 1808 in 68th y."
North Main Street Cemetery is located on the west side of North Main Street, Route 7, 6/10 mile north of Woodstock Avenue, Route 4 west (Rutland, Vermont). "At the time of the recording of the inscriptions in 1953, the cemetery was in very poor condition. Many stones were broken & some actually crumbled to a powder. Grass mowed. It was, however, well fenced with a padlock on the gate. This is presumably the second oldest cemetery in Rutland, VT." [The cemetery was copied by Mrs. Alton Swan and Mrs. Blanche Guyette and recorded in VT NSDAR 24:1-45 & FHL film 850117]
