| James Roach probably died about 1839. At this time it appears he died in North Carolina. His wife Matilda Married Ranson Clayton in 1840. His two son's (Joseph and James Harrison) are listed on the 1850 census in (Pontotoc County) Mississippi living with Ranson Clayton and his wife Matilda Phillips Roach Clayton. F. Birchett, J James Harrison Roach was borned November 22,1838, DeKalb County Alabama. James Harrison Roach married Pernicia Ann Florence Deel on December 20, 1860. When they got married they made their living farming. Their first child was born September 23, 1861. Seven months later he enlisted in the Confederate States Army on April 25, 1862 at Saltillo, Mississippi. Their first child died June 1862 two months after he enlisted. Their second child was born December 1862. He was discharged at close of the war in 1865 at Meridian, Mississippi. At time of discharge he was a private, Company G 31st., Mississippi Infantry, Confederate States Army. They had two more children while they lived in Mississippi. James & Pernicia along with their three children came by wagon train from Pontotoc county, Mississippi to Ellis county, Ferris, Texas. They arrived in Ellis county August 31, 1870. James found work as a constable in Ellis county in the 1870's. (Constable is a peace officer with less authority and smaller jurisdiction than a sheriff, empowered to serve writs, warrants and to make arrests.) They had three more children in Ferris, Texas. Pernicia Ann Florence (Deel) Roach died January 13, 1878. James Peter Roach taught himself how to play the fiddle when he was a young man. On weekends a group of friends would meet at someone house. They would roll-up the carpet. He would play for them to dance. They would take up a collection and he would make a couple of dollars. At this time wages for labor was $0.25 to $0.50 per day. James Peter Roach & Laura Viola Wheelis Roach Came to Connerville, Johnston County, Oklahoma in 1918. James Peter Roach was a janitor for Decatur Public Schools at the time they left to visit Laura's brother in Arkansas. On this trip he cleaned out water wells for food or money. They traveled awhile and worked a while to get enough money to continue. He had built his wagon up at the rear for sleeping. James and Laura slept on top of built up portion and their children Willie Ruben & James Washington slept underneath their bed. Callie and Gussie slept in front of the wagon. They cooked in cast iron pots and skillets. They had all their belongings tied to the wagon. Callie and Gussie would dress up their pet rooster to pass the time. The rooster would strut around when they dressed him up and everybody would laugh. James Peter Roach - Cleaned out water wells for a living in Oklahoma. When he retired he retired on welfare. (They called it old age assistance at the time). |
