David Merrit Muncrief By Pearl Gertrude (Muncrief) Collins
David Merrit Muncrief was born February 3, 1873 at Van Buren, Arkansas. Along with his parents, brother and two sisters he moved to Indian Territory by covered wagon and settled in Loco Community.
In 1896 the family moved to what is now the old Coatsworth Community, then known as Who'd Thought It, and settled on an Indian Lease. They built a big room and a dirt floor and one-half dug out for a kitchen. They then cleared the land and started farming.
On December 25, 1898, Dave married Clara Swain. Dave and Clara moved 4 miles west of the father's lease and leased land from the Hoetubby Indian Lease. At this home 2 children were born; Spencer, who died at the age of 2 and was laid to rest at the Wells Valley Cemetery and a daughter named Pearl.
The family next moved a short distance West to another Indian Lease. Here Lydia and Bryan were born. The next move for the family was west across the Delaware Creek where the children attended school at Nickel Hill. At this home place Ernest, Edna, David, and Charlie were born.
The family then moved just west of Bromide at the Pane Place. Dave and Clara had 3 more children; Alice deceased, Gladys deceased, and Nettie.
Dave farmed and raised livestock also he had one of the largest syrup mills in the area. The farmers would come for miles with their stripped cane to be crushed and made into syrup. You could smell the aroma of the juice cooking for miles. The children worked and helped at the mill; Lydia and Pearl skimming the cooking juices and Bryan driving the mules that pulled the press.
Pearl married Charlie Collins October 3, 1926 at the home place. Dave and Clara went all out for the wedding with 90 people attending. A rainstorm came up and about one half of the guest had to spend the night.
February 15, 1927, Clara died very sudden, leaving 4 small children. Charlie and Pearl moved back with Dave so Pearl could help with the children. Charlie and Pearl lived with Dave 3 years then Edna took over managing the household.
Dave married Mary Alice Lesley later and 2 children were born to this union. They were Neomia and Richard.
One hot afternoon June 28, 1933, Dave walked across the pasture from the home to go fishing. That night when he failed to return his children went in search of him. He was found about one-half mile from home. He died before reaching the pond. Dave left 10 children. Lydia married Audie Walker, Pearl married Charlie Collins, Ernest married Ernestine Schultz, Bryan married Othelia Freeney, Edna married Bill Roach, David married Billie Hilton, Charlie married Gladys Musgraves, Neomia married Gene Clark, and Richard married Sunny Pierce.
Pearl had 5 children, Clinton, Ray, Calvin (deceased), Melvin, and Sarah. Pearl the oldest Muncrief daughter lives at Bromide. The youngest Muncrief descendant is Timothy Collins of Madill. The remaining Muncrief daughters of Dave that are still living are Lydia, Edna, Nettie, Neomia, and Pearl.
