Samuel Muncrief was born in France, and died date unknown in Died on voyage to America - Buried at Sea. He married Sarah Bishop.
Notes for Samuel Muncrief: Family Legend is that the head of this family was Samuel Muncrief, (a Frenchman), married Sarah Bishop (a English Woman). They named their first son Bishop Muncrief. They sailed for America and Samuel died on the voyage and was buried at sea. His widow and small son lived with the colonists in Georgia. She was five months pregnant when her husband died and she gave birth to a second son, naming him Samuel for his father.
THE MUNCRIEF'S NAME
The name Moncrieff was first adopted by the inhabitants of the lands of Moncrieff in the parish of Dunbarny, near Perth, Scotland. Moncrieff has various spellings, Moncreaff, Moncrief, Moncreif, Montcrieff, Moncreiff, Moncreiffe, Muncrief but they are all pronounced the same way! The name Moncreiffe comes from the barony of Moncreiffe in Perthshire. The family name is taken from the Gaelic "Monadh Craoibhe" meaning the "Hill of the Sacred Bough".
Although the name is certainly older, the first official record appears when Mathew Moncrieff (brother in law of a co-Regent of Scotland during the minority of Alexander III) was granted a charter for the lands of Moncrieff from Sir Roger de Mowbray in 1248 AD. The lands of Moncreiffe then grew with the addition of Culdares and Duneaves in the Highlands and were incorporated into the Barony of Moncreiffe in 1455. At that time a Laird in Scotland had the power of life and death over their territories.
The land at Culdares was sold in 1598 but some Moncrieff's remained there. The Moncrieff's were also present in Kinnaird in Atholl and share a strong association with the Murrays of Atholl, and adopted the Murray of Atholl tartan when Tartans became fashionable. Moncrieffs have served in the Atholl Highlanders (the Murray Chiefs private guard). The summit of Moncreiffe Hill was a stronghold of the ancient Kings of the Picts, conveniently situated between Abernethy Abbey and Forteviot Palace.
The three main lines of the family descended from the eighth Laird of Moncreiffe, the Moncreiffes of Moncreiffe, the Lords Moncreiff of Tulliebole, and Moncrieffe of Bandirran. The Scott-Moncreiffs and the Moncreiffs of Kimmoth descended from Moncrieff of Bandirran.
The sixth Laird, Malcolm Moncreiffe of the Ilk, was a member of the council of James II. When he died in 1465, his son became the seventh Laird.
Three noble French families were established when one Moncreiffe family joined the Scots Guard of Archers of the Kings of France in the sixteenth century and settled in France. (I believe that the Muncrief's of Johnston County Oklahoma descended from one of the families in France. (William David Roach)
Sir John Moncreiffe, the twelfth Laird, was sheriff of Perthshire and became Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1626.
In 1685 a second Moncreiffe baronetcy was created when James VII created Thomas, the fourteenth Laird, a baronet.
Family Line: Sir Mathew de Muncrefe succeeded by Sir John Moncreiff Sir William Moncreiff Sir John Moncreiff (1st Baronet) Sir John Moncreiff (2nd Baronet) Sir David Moncreiff (3rd Baronet) Sir James Moncreiff (4th Baronet) Sir John Moncreiff (5th Baronet) Sir Hugh Moncreiff (6th Baronet) Rev Sir William Moncreiff (7th Baronet) Rev Sir Henry Wellwood Moncreiff (8th Baronet) Sir James Wellwood Moncreiff (9th Baronet) Sir Henry Wellwood Moncreiff (10th Baronet) Sir James Moncreiff (11th Baronet) (1st Baron) Henry James (2nd Baron)
The Moncreiffe's medieval links are still present in modern times. The clan is obliged to pay Perth Hospital £2 per year as during Robert the Bruce's reign of Scotland, Sir John Moncreiffe granted a charter to the Black Friars of Perth allowing them corn from Moncreiffe in exchange that they pray for the souls of the Moncreiffe family. This right was changed to a monetary value in 1591.
