Notes for Joseph Wheelis: While checking the deeds in Surry County, North Carolina Robert Wheless Jr. (year 2001) found Benjamin & Wife Elizabeth Wheelis living close to Joseph & Wife Mary on the Nottoway River, but the documents showed the spelling of Benjamin Wheelis as Wheless and Joseph Wheelis as Whealess. Later on Benjamin's name was listed as Wheless on his will. His name was signed with an X.
I (William David Roach, born August 8, 1940) believe that the correct spelling of the Wheelis name is Wheeless. All my files are spelled "Wheelis" because this is the way my immediate family spelled Wheelis. All the names, all the dates, and all the places match with the spelling of Wheeless. It is a matter of record that the name is spelled in a variety of ways; as Wheelis, Wheelus, Wheles, Wheless, Wheeless, and even Wheelers. In the early days the recorder spelled the name according to sound. All through the records many of the signatures are signed with an X. This meant that someone other than a family member was spelling the name in my opinion.
