In Search of - The Roberson Family TreeUpdated July 7, 2005 | |
| I am particularly interested in information about the following surnames: HOLLEY (from AL? to CA), John Cochran Holley b.@1828 AL? or TN?, d. 1912 CA He migrated to CA in early 1850s. His wife was Martha Birkhead b. 1849. They had one son, George Newton Holley. ROBERSON (from AR,OK to CA) Family lore says that (William) HENRY Roberson had 2 brothers James and John. He may have been from AL. He married (Elizabeth Ann) Minerva Jones and they had 4 girls and 1 boy, William James b. 1847 in AR. Henry died in 1858, leaving his widow EAM Roberson pregnant with 4 young children to raise. Probate records list them as William James Roberson, Sarah E, Perlina A, Alice V. & Henry (Ellen). Recently obtained documentation from the National Archives indicates Henry was born 11/5/1818 in Giles Co, TN. He served as a Tennessee volunteer and when discharged, lived in Stewart Co TN. Documents include a page from the family Bible, which lists an additional 2 daughters we did not know about previously - Martha & Mary Jane. It also shows the first few entries spelled Rober-t-son but later changed to Roberson. His widow testified that he came to believe the spelling was correct without the "t". William James may have been in the Civil War, but the unit engraved on his tombstone in the Darwin, OK cemetery is not correct. Sarah Keturah Hardin, daughter of Alexander Hardin and Emeline Duke, was his wife. USHER (MD,GA,AL,MS to TX,OK then CA) Edward Usher m. Susan Stouse in Lamar County, TX in 1879. They moved to, lived and died in the Atoka, OK area. His father was Esma Usher who married Mary Ann Nelson. Esma died (date unknown) and Mary remarried John L. Reiger. Esma is said to have been from MD, but has some children born in AL & GA. They moved to MS before going to TX. Edward's siblings are Jane (m. Thomas Pope), Missouri, Robert Fulton (m. Amanda Evans), William, Josephine, & George. The Ushers consistently claimed and pursued Choctaw heritage through the Nelson line. Mary Ann's father was Jesse Nelson. Dawes commission found an earlier land claim as follows: An examination of the records of this office has been made with reference to the names of Jesse (or Jessie) Nelson and Chema (or Chimah) and it is discovered that there was a Jesse Nelson, an applicant for scrip who was rejected, who was head of a family and who married a widow named Chema. Their children are given as step-son Buffa, abt 13 years of age at the date of the treaty, Falamintubbee, son 12 years of age at the date of the treaty, and Dixon, a deceased boy who died about one year after the treaty, aged one year. Jesse's brothers were said to be Eden, Isaac and Mitchell who settled in Doaksville IT/OK following relocation. (Dawes interview testimony.) All claims were denied and we have been unable to obtain further information about the family or other connections who may have been approved. and SHAW (Huckaby, MO to CA) William Alexander Shaw b. 1855, d. 1928 married Sarah Elizabeth Huckaby b. 1853 KY, d. 1935 MO. One of their sons was John Melvin Shaw. He married Martha Moore and they moved to CA to raise their family. Any information you may share about the ancestry of these individuals would be greatly appreciated. If you note a related connection, would like more information, or can correct an error, please let me know. THANKS!! ************** COMING SOON ************** Compilation of what we have done so far on all the lines... |
