The Englishmen who originally assumed the name Threlkeld held manorial lands in the township of that name. Thus, they were De Threlkeld---of or from Threlkeld township in the county of Cumberland, England. This area of England was not represented in the Domesday record of 1086 or in of the Rotuli Hundorum of 1273. Neither the Threlkeld place name nor the surname, therefore, is included in these ancient records.
One assumption is that Sir Lionel Threlkeld came to England in 1066 with William the Conqueror during the Norman Conquest. The earliest factual reference to the Threlkeld name is the record of Henry de Threlkeld as sheriff of Westmoreland in 1292. At that time, the place name had existed for two or more centuries, while the surname could have been used from a few years to over a Century.
