My gg/grandfather was Alfred George Robertson, born in London in 1798. He joined the English Navy as a 13 year old and sailed under the command of Sir Home Popham to India. About a year later they arrived at the Cape of Good Hope where he demobbed from the Navy and joined his older half-brother, William, in business. William had himself come to the Cape under the auspices of the Navy and his mentor Sir Home. Their uncles and cousins also had business interests at the Cape but they later moved on to India and Mauritious.
William never married but Alfred George married Johanna Susanna Groenewald, a fifth generation descendant of Christoffel Grunewaldt who came to the Cape in 1670 from Koenigsberg, Germany.

The two produced 8 sons and one daughter whose descendants are now part of a very large clan of Robertsons, mostly in South Africa.

I have gathered a great deal of biographical and historical information about this family and have started moving back to Alfred George's ancestors in England and Scotland.
