| I am researching my family name STEPTOE. The name is not a nick-name, but is of Anglo-Saxon origin. The name appears in Domesday as STEPJI.I am collecting a data base of STEPTOE's World wide with the intention of starting a One Name Society. There are many STEPTOE families in the USA. and a few in Canada. I believe these families all may have originated in Berkshire, England. My family is from the county of Surrey in England. Other names being researched are:- THOMAS, THOMPSON, EDE, SKILTON, GILLES, HEWARD, HOLMES DAVIS, DEAN, BAX, ALLINGHAM, MORE, EDWARDS, BIXLEY, BASSETT, MARSHALL, FULLER. I am also researching my mother-in-laws American (Loyalist) roots in the Long Island, New York area. Richard LAWRENCE lived in Richmond and served with the Royal Naval Shipyards during the revolution. He was arrested after the Peace and suit was brought against him by three individuals who claimed he had confiscated goods from them for the Royal Navy. He was stripped of his possessions to secure his release. He hid his family at West Farms and journeyed to Britain to plead his case for compensation before the Royal Commissioners. Whilst there he died and is buried at Eltham, in Kent County. His father was John LAWRENCE, and his mother was Anna EDSALL and they married at Hackensack, New Jersey. Richard's baptism appears in the Schraalenburg/Hackensack registers along with two sisters, Charity & Maria (or Mary). There is evidence that he also had at least two brothers named John & Jonathon and they may have been twins. Ironically they both died the same year and their WIlls are published in New York. John LAWRENCE Sr is described as a man of great personal strength and was known as the "Lion Lawrence" There is a suggestion that John LAWRENCE lived the life of a country gentleman and was constantly receiving money from England. |
