Sylvester and Mary moved from Roblin in the early 1870's, and went to north of Meaford, where the tank range is now. They built a stone house, with 2 stories, and I am told that when you went in the front door, you could either go right up the stairs to the second floor if you wished. The stairs down were at the back of the house, and the children used to run this circuit up and down the stairs. The kids also helped their dad to build a stone bridge on the property. Unfortunately, this house no longer exists. When the Canadian government took over the area for a practice area for tanks during the war, they used the existing buildings for target practice. I am also told that the reason that Mary and Sylvester moved to Meaford is that Mary was such a quarrelsome person that she had managed to alienate most of her family! (As an aside, there still exists in Richmond township the Windover cemetery, where you can see the stones of Jacob and Melinda Deline and John and Lois Windover). Anyhow, the next move of the family was to Lambton County, in Dawn Township, and from there to Camden Township in Kent Co., specifically the town of Wabash. After Sylvester's death there in 1907, Mary got it into her head that the body in the coffin wasn't that of her husband. Nothing would satisfy her but that they dig it up and look. Hester Boyer told me that she was present at the exhumation. She said that when they pried off the lid, Mary refused to look inside, and Hester, even though she was pregnant at the time, had to do the looking! She said it was her Dad--she recognized him by his goatee! Anyhow, Mary Deline married Joseph Blackburn next, but I don't think this was a particularly happy marriage either, from what I've been told.

Obituary:

"The death occurred in St. Joseph's Hospital at two o'clock this morning, of Mary, Relict of the late J. B. Blackburn formerly of the fourth concession, Chatham Township. The late Mrs. Blackburn had been enjoying the best of health until Thursday evening, when she suffered a stroke. She was rushed to the hospital Friday. Her death was very sudden and unexpected and came as a blow to her many friends in the city.

"Her husband predeceased her about fourteen years ago. She leaves to mourn their loss, three daughters, Mrs. Wilson of Thedford; Mrs. C Montague and Mrs. William Boyer, both of this city, and seven sons.

"The funeral will be conveyed to Dresden by motor and interment made in Dresden Cemetery."
