Alfred Pickle (b. 23 September 1820, d. 06 March 1921)
Alfred Pickle (son of George Pickle and Sarah Howell) was born 23 September 1820 in Pottersville, NJ on the Amos Pickle farm, Pottersville, NJ, and died 06 March 1921 in Fairmount, NJ buried in Fairmount Cem.. He married Sarah Crater on 14 July 1842 in Fairmount Presbyterian Church, daughter of Moritz Crater, Jr. and Catherine Cripps.
Notes for Alfred Pickle: The name Pickle was also spelled Pickael and Pickel. Alfred Pickle never used tobacco in any form nor drank alcoholic beverages. At age 100 years, he still read his Bible without glasses and used to walk to service Sundays in the Presbyterian Curch, about one-quarter of a mile from his home until about a year before his 100th birthday. His daughter and only child, Mrs. Sarah Thurston, herself about 79 years old, lived with him.
My father, Raymond Roberts, told me that his eyesight was restored to him at about the age of 80 years. He also said that he would take long walks in the country side and you could hear him whistling as he walked. Mrs Bertha Ebersol remembers that he was very hard of hearing in his last days.
"Historic Notes on Fairmount" by Freeman Leigh written in March 1926 "What is now known as Fairmount had several previous names. It was fist called Foxenburg, then Fox Hill, after its first settler there named Johaness Peter Fuchs (Peter John Fox). Later yet, James Parker gave lands to build the new Presbyterian Church and the name was changed to Parkersville. Because of the astounding view in many directions from the top of Fox Hill, the cornerstone of the schoolhouse read "Fairplain". Somehow the name evolved into Fairmount which was the name given to the first post office in the area."
"Alfred Pickle.- Fairmount's Centenarian" "Mr Pickle was born Sept 23, 1820 at Fairmount within two miles where he now resides. He has always been temperate in all his habits, ate plenty of both meats and vegetable, never allowing himself to be hurried and perhaps his long life is due to the lack of strenousness so prevalent at the present day. His daughter, Mrs Sarah Thurston, and his grandson Henry Thurston care for him and to them much credit is due for his long life."
"Mr Pickle was always fond of outdoor life and especially of gardening at which he excelled. He did all his garden work unassisted up to his 98th year. He was present nearly every Sunday at the Fairmount Presbyterian Church until past 96 years of age, when because of his impaired hearing and the presence of so many automobiles on the country road, the family declined to let him walk to church as was his usual custom.
