He served 4-yrs in the Civil War. Post 48, Private, Co F2 Reg. NJ Cavalry.
His death was a result of an accident. He was driving a surrey on the road when a dog scared the horse and James was killed. No other family records were found. There was another Thurston in the area, named George Thurston. He married Rachel Ann Teets daughter of Peter R. Teets and Rachel Schuyler, married Sept. 4 1865. It is possible that George Thurston was a brother to James G. Thurston? They were married within 4 years of each other. Mrs. Dorothy Metzler, a former neighbor of George Thurston says that James and George were brothers.
