Notes for Moritz Crater: The Crater house is written about in the book "Historic Notes on Fairmount, New Jersey, page #34. "The house is in the lane just east of the Presbyterian Church where Peter Robinson now resides. (1922) It may not be the oldest house but it is the best preserved and is the best monument we have of the early architecture. The date of the erection is not left to conjecture. The builder had his name inscribed in a tablet of imperishable marble or granite which is placed high up in the gable of the house. On it appears the following inscription: Sept. 1780 Moritz Creter Margaret Creter Wm. Corin S. Adams Mary Margaret Creter was his wife and the other two were probably the builders. The building is 30 ft. wide and 40 ft. long and stands due east and west."
It is noted above that the tablet is of imperishable marble or granite. On page 63 of "Historical Notes" it mentions that the gravestones of his parents are made of a steel grey marble slab in each case. His parents died 8 years earlier and the slabs and tablet may be from the same quarry.
May 6, 1996 note. I located this house and found that it had been beautifully restored. Attached to the house is a magnificent addition, leaving the original house completely separate. The present owner is Dr. Marc Grodman and his wife Pam. J.W.(Bill) Roberts
Note: Margaret Creter's father, Johan Georg Windemuth built a similar house near Stillwater, NJ in 1755.
