According to the 1870 US Census, George was 29 years old and worked on a farm and that he was born in New York. Dorothy Metzler who lives in Pottersville states that George was a brother of James G. Thurston. An old (1873) atlas of Pottersville shows a G. Thurston living in Pottersville, across the Lamington River from Dorothy Metzler's home. Her deceased father told her that G.Thurston lived there.
