Stella Fredrickson Hawes 2001
Stella Otelia Hawes, 98 peacefully passed away at Providence Marianwood in Issaquah December 9, 2004. She was born September 16, 1906 in Grand Marais, Michigan the youngest child of John Seifert Fredrickson and Ida Marie Andersson who were both Swedish speaking Finnish immigrants. The family took the train in 1909 from Michigan to Bremerton so her Father could work for the Navy Yard. Stella's first job was driving a "jitney" bus during the lunch break of the usual driver when she was only 15. After Stella graduated Bremerton Charleston Union High School June 1925 she worked in Detroit for a year while she lived with her sister, Ellen. She returned to Bremerton and met William J. G. Hawes. They eloped on January 26, 1929 to marry in Seattle. Stella worked as a legal secretary until she had children - William J.G. Hawes Jr. and Richard E. Hawes. When her boys were teenagers, she worked for 12 years as a legal secretary. She was involved in Lady Elks for a short time but received her 50-year membership pin from Order of the Eastern Star Reliance Chapter #70. Except for the year she lived in Detroit, Stella lived in Bremerton from 1909 to 1986 when she moved to Bellevue to live with her son, Dick. Madison House in Kirkland was her residence from 1992-2004. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill in 1986, her sister, Ellen in 1976 and her brother Fred in 1985.
