Stella Fredericks Hawes says her mother came to America from Sweden at the age of eleven to work as a domestic for a doctor's family that sponsored her in Michigan (possibly in Grand Marais). Ida had two brothers that came to visit from Sweden when Stella was a small child - one was named Axel. Stella recalls that, "My mother could do ANYTHING, there isn't anything that I can remember that she couldn't do." She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed making Stella many designer dresses just from looking at a picture of one. She wanted to leave behind the "Old Country" - whenever her husband would speak to her in Swedish, she would reprimand him and say, "We are in America now and will only speak English!" In 1941, she had been diagnosed with cancer but refused surgery. She survived 6-8 months after diagnosis. Upon further research, it was learned that Ida was actually from a Swedish speaking area in Finland called Nykarleby and that she was about 18 years old. Stella recalled a village called Nykarleby but believed it to be the birthplace of her Father.
