From the research of June Gulland Downham:
In 1888 Grandfather Charles Arnold died at Battle, Sussex aged 84 years. His last Will and Testament made out 27 September 1886 left all estates and effects absolutely to his dear wife Susan; Ann Bailey & Elizabeth Arnold were witness to this Will, which had to have its date corrected in a Codicil - signed by Harriet Faulconer and Sarah Thomas,(servant to Mr .Arnold),and was Proved by Susan Arnold on 27.09.1888 when widow and Sole Executrix.
Charles Arnold and Susan (nee Bailey) lived at Calbeck Hill, Battle, East Sx. for a number of years; they are mentioned in the 1841 Census with children Elizabeth 15, Harriet 7, and Frederick 2, at No. 48, Calbeck Hill. With them Elizabeth Bailey 65 Independent; and Nicholas 15 Road Surveyor;also Laurence Woolgar 30 Miller journeyman.
In the 1861 Census they are the same family but older. Charles and Susan were both born at Lewes. Sx.. Charles the son of William and Sarah born 28.4.1803 at Lewes All Saints/christened 17.6.1803. Susan born 10.7.1803 and christened there
16.5.1803 at St. Michaels, Lewes child of George and Elizabeth Bailey; his occupation being bricklayer. Susan had brothers George born 1807 and John born 1810.
In the 1881 Census of Battle, Sussex (RG 1034) entry no.90 shows Charles and
Susan Arnold both 77, and he a Managing Solicitor's Clerk born Lewes.
Charles appears in various Trade Directories -ie : - P.0.1855 at Battle a Charles
Arnold is Actuary of the Savings Bank.In 1878 Charles Arnold aged 74 is
Clerk to the Burial Board.
As we know Charles died in 1888 at Battle and Susan died there 1892, aged 89 ~
One presumes they married in Lewes around 1823; (not searched for successfully)
Elizabeth turns up as a housekeeper of 55 in the 1881 Census for Wandsworth. Sy. this the Arnold daughter, born in Hastings near Battle.
A George and Susan Bailey aged 55 and 50 respectively, turn up in the 1891 Census at 20, Trinity Square, Newington, as Caretaker & wife.. born in Tunbr' Kent.
This could be a cousin of Harriet Faulconer.
