This began as My Agnew Family Connection and went a lot further than that. I have Documentation that Takes the Agnew Side of my Family to 900 AD Scotland, England and Beyond. I never dreamed that the Agnew Family Went so deep into History. There are many Kings of Scotland and Britian. These people listed are our Great Grandfathers and Grandmothers and their Families. If you are a descendant of one of these people then those following are your people.
I believe that the one I found that I like the Most is Robert 1st, Robert the Bruce King of Scotland. Robert the Bruce is my 20th Great Grandfather. Robert Bruce is surely the greatest of all the great Scottish heroes, yet the Hollywood movie Braveheart gave all the heroics to his compatriot William Wallace, making Bruce out to be nothing more than a self-serving opportunist. King Robert was completely taken out of character in the Movie. Mel Gibson Owes an Apology to us, the Family of Robert on Earth today. A much better Movie would be about Robert the Bruce and His leadership of Scotland in the Fight for Independance.
Robert 1st was one of the top three knights in the world and not at all like they cast him in the movie. He was much of a man and a leader of men and a Hero to Scotland. On Mid-Summer's Day, the 24th of June 1314 one of the most momentous battles in British history occurred. The armies of Robert Bruce heavily outnumbered by their English rivals, but employing tactics that prevented the English army from effectively employing its strength, won a decisive victory at Bannockburn.
The Declaration of Independence (Scotland's most famous document) signed at Arbroath and sent to the Pope by Robert was the culmination of Bruce's career. Signed by representatives from all classes of Scots society, it was stated that since ancient times the Scots had been free to choose their own kings, a freedom that was a gift from God. And so it was, but a gift that had needed a Robert Bruce to deliver. He is the one who sent the letter to the Pope which is Scotland's Declaration Independance and the most famous document ever in Scotland.
Many Agnews in America are kin to this wonderful man as well as many other Kings and others in Scotland, England, And France. The Agnews were over Galloway and Were the heredity Sheriffs as long as that Office was in Scotland. Lochnaw Castle was their Castle but It passed out of the hands of Agnews in the late 1990's and is owned by someone in Hong Kong now. Too bad we couldn't get together and Buy It. There are enough of us to do so.
My Grandmother was an Agnew born in North Mississippi to Agnews who moved there from Abbeville, SC in 1853, by way of Gettyesburg, PA and From Scotland of Course.
