Notes for Patrick Agnew:
Excerpt from the book "Heredatary Sheriffs of Galloway" by Sir A. Agnew, Pg 147:
"Patrick Agnew may be taken as fair type of a Scottish hereditary official in 1500. As to law, he troubled himself little with studying the statutes. Custom was law to him, and he was not scrupulous in enforcing his supposed rights in defianceof any Acts of Parliament to the contrary. If an injurey was to be redressed, or a friend to be assisted, he sprang into his saddle, and dealt out justice with his oun good sword, caring little for the technicalities of law courts; if attacked, he was ready to defend himself; if his cattle were carried off, he was quite capable of returning the compliment with interest. And such an assertion of the dignaty of his office he doubtless considered necessary to sustain the traditionary status of a Galloway Sheriff!"
