The Home Page of the Robin Family of Southwestern Louisiana
The progenitor of the Robin (Row' ban) family of Southwest Louisiana was Francois Robin, M.D., who arrived at the Poste des Opelousas in the Louisiana Territory circa 1780.He served as a ''medecin'' in Imperial St. Landry Parish and became a large landowner; he married three times and reared six children.Research has indicated that he was from the province of Languedoc in France and was the son of Joseph Pascal Robin and Francoise Chalamon. He also had a brother, Antoine, who remained in France. My grandfather, Joseph Edward Robin, Sr., lived with his family on the same track of land that Dr. Robin acquired in the late 18th century. My sister's children are the eighth generation of our family to live here. The ancestors of my maternal grandfather, Charles Curley Moreau provided the branch of my family which had its roots in the French Military Post of Pointe Coupee in the 1750's.Jean Pierre Antoine Moreau arrived, probably from Canada, circa 1750, and began his family there. His descendants traveled to Attakapas--present-day St. Martin Parish--where they settled before moving on to St. Landry Parish. The Moreau family became established in the area which became known as ''Prairie Gros Chevreuil'' (Prairie of the Big Deer.)This community is now known as Pecanniere. This branch of the family also has French-Canadian, French Creole, and German roots.Nineteenth-century migration to America from France brought Jean-Jacques Coussan and Michel Crouchet to Louisiana, where they established their respective families in the Bayou Carion Crow (Carencro) community of present-day Lafayette Parish. This is the ancestry of my paternal grandmother, Mary Edna Crouchet. There are strong Acadian ties in the branch, as well as one ''American'', George Washington Addison, who was a newspaper publisher in the 1800's.My maternal grandmother, Rita Lanclos, provided the Lanclos/Mayer branch with its French-Canadian and Germanic influences. There is, of course, a strong tie to Acadie as well. The progenitors of her line were Antoine Dansleclau Lanclos of France and Andre Mayer of Germany. If you are interested in any of this history, please visit the Report Section where I have a detailed Ancestor Report. You may also contact me at my e-mail address or at my home address and I shall gladly share any research that I have.I would also welcome any information concerning these families, especially any on Francois Robin. | The Home Page of the Robin Family of Southwestern Louisiana Updated September 6, 2000 |
