Notes for G
EORGE KOOGLER:
From "Life under 4 Flags" by C.E. May the following is found on page 254-255, "George Kugler (Coogler, Koogler), another early ethnic German settler in North River Basin, located on the south side of North River in the vicinity of McGills Ford before 1781, for on January 8 of that year he and John Vice had 19 acres of land lying on the south side of the river between two of its branches surveyed. This 19-acre tract began on a line of said George Kugler's land. He was listed in 1788 in Captain Benjamin Smith's Militia Company, number 1, as a tithable with five head of horses. July 15, 1800, William Herring and John Ewin (Ewing), commissioners appointed by Rockingham County Court, conveyed for Joseph Smith 330 acres of land on Dry River to George Kugler and his wife Elizabeth. This tract of land had been patented to John Hynds (Hinds) April 6, 1769, and conveyed by him to Daniel Denniston, who reconveyed it to Joseph Smith. Said Smith sold it to John Kingery, giving him a mortgage deed. Kingery defaulted and Smith foreclosed on the 330-acre tract. On June 17, 1805 George Kugler and his wife Elizabeth conveyed 160 acres of the tract to George Airey (Arey); and the next day they conveyed 150 acres of the tract to their son George, Jr. Kugler is a German surname denoting bullet maker. Kugler was anglicized in the North River Basin first to "Coogler" and then to "Koogler." The Koogler were Lutherans when they first settled in the basin."

Virginia Valley Records list a Jacob Cogar as an early
settler in Valley. Son Michael served in revolution (page
318) -- Jacob could be father of George Koogler
Also records indicate a Nicholas Koger was present in Valley
Area and was the brother of Jacob Koger. Some sources refer
to Nicholas as George Nicholas Koger.
One of these two individuals is likely the father of George
Koogler.
George Nicholas is said to have had a son named Michael who
was alternately referred to in the court records as George.
Therefore speculation could be made that George Koogler was
the same George Michael Koger. However, indications are
that George Michael Koger married a Hanna Haas, spinster
daughter of Peter Haas. Could this have been a second
marriage? Because George Michael was also a ward of Adam
Miller in 1755. Researchers could be mixing up George and
Michael in Court Records
George was not listed in 1820 Census. His wife was listed
as head of the household
