62. PETER GORDON8 HOAGLAND (CHRISTOPHER7, MARTINUS6, CHRISTOPHER5, CHRISTOFFEL "STOFFEL" HOAGLAND4 HOOGLANDT, HARMAN DIRCKSZ3, DIRCK HARMANSZ2, HARME1) was born April 14, 1782 in Rockaway, Morris County, NJ, and died September 28, 1825 in Dover, NJ. Notes for P
ETER GORDON HOAGLAND:
From "The Hoagland Family in America"

Peter learned the blacksmith's trade, and when he reached his majority engaged in manufacturing nails. He owned and lived upon what is now known as the "Munson Farm", near Dover, NJ. He purchased the "Park Tavern," situated where the McFarlane Park now is. This well-known house he kept for twelve years, and at times there were 100 teams standing in and about the stables and grounds, loaded with produce from the country, on their way to the New York and Newark markets.

He moved from the Park Tavern to his hew house, now the present site of the N.J.C.R.R. Depot. He also bought 119 acres of land opposite, where the rolling mill now stands. By an unfortunate venture in connection with the rolling mill (endorsing the mill's notes), he lost nearly all his property. He died in the Beaman House, Dover, NJ, September 28, 1825. His wife died January 12, 1858. She was buried in the Presbyterian Churchyard, Rockaway, NJ.

Mr. and Mrs. Hoagland attended the Presbyterian Church. She joined that denomination in 1831, in Rockaway, and in 1835 brought her certificate to the Dover Presbyterian Chruch. They were both highly esteemed for their hospitality, their kindly disposition and their sterling worth.

Notes for M
OSES TUTTLE HOAGLAND:
From "The Hoagland Family in America"

Moses lived at Mount Pleasant, Morris County, NJ until 1799. At this date, by reason of the depressed condition of the iron mining business, and also because of an act of the New Jersey Legislature, making its worthless bills of credit a legal tender, which act completely reversed the order of business, and brought great financial disaster to the proprietors of the mines, he, with his grandfather, Moses Tuttle, sought new home in the then new and far away State of Kentucky, buying a large tract of land in Gallatin County, upon the Ohio River, at what is now "Hunter's Bottom." His grandfather remained about two years, and then returned to New Jersey, and in his place Cornelius, the father of Moses T., with his entire family, removed to the home which the son had prepared for them.

"On the death of his father, five years afterwards, he became the head of the family, the counsellor of his mother, and to him his younger brothers looked through life with a reverence almost filial. At the breaking out of Indian hostilities in some of the Southern States, a position was procured for him on the staff of General Jackson, and he served with credit to himself and satisfaction to his Commander-in-Chief. After the battle of New Orleans, he returned home to the peaceful pursuits of private life."

When he and Sarah married, they resided upon his estate until their death. She died at the age of 65. He died May 12, 1869, aged 91 years. His daughter, Miss Ellen Payne Hoagland, writes: "My sister Adeline and I live here at the beautiful homestead in Hunter's Bottom, on the Ohio River (three miles from Madison, Ind.), where our father and mother died. The are buried on the farm in 'pretty Walnut Grove Cemetery'. Our father was a very hospitable man, and his house was a home for Methodist ministers, of which denomination he and mother were earnest and consistent members."
