John Ingram (b. Abt. 1620, d. 1654)
Notes for John Ingram:
REFN: 3473THE INGRAM FAMILY
Northumberland County, Virginia is the last of the several Counties on
the Potomic River and boarders on Westmoreland County; Chesapeake Bay washes the eastern shore of Northumberland and midway of that shore is Ingram Bay into which empites Great Wicomico Rivier. The County is well-watered -- rivers, creeks, lakes and the entire areaa, 223,000 square miles is rural, the poplulation is small, there are no large towns. The county seat, Heathsville was named for the founder of Phi Beta Kappa Fraternity at William and Mary College; its only claim to fame as far as I know. His home, Springfield, is at Heathsville.
The County came into existence in 1648; it had until them been an Indian District called Chickacoan. The first Ingram record was in 1651. John Ingram and Richard Flint were granted 406 acres on Dividing Creek 5 April, 1651 for transporting eight persons to the Colony; of this 250 acres went to Ingram. Dividing Creek is down the coast, south of Ingram Bay. (Nugent's "Cavaliers and Pioneers," p. 214).
When the Ingrams arrived in Northumberland County I do not know but it is evident that John Ingram had a family in 1651; he signed his Will, 8
April, 1654 and it was proved 20 November, 1654. (Northumberland County, Records, 1652-55, page 126.)
In this Will John is of "Great Wicomoca" and he leaves land to his eldest
son, Thomas Ingram, where he, John Ingram now lives on Dividing Creek; he names his wife Jane, his daughter Elizabeth not yet eighteen years old and to his daughter Jane he leaves 330 acres. It is evident that Thomas was not of age; three overseers were named and not until 1669 did Thomas claim possession under the Will of his deceased father. (Fleet's Northumberland County Records, 1645-1720 A-L p.91).
John migrated from Great Britain to the Colony of Virginia around the middle of the 17 century. Settled in Northumberland County, Virginia.
