Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS³ PRUITT (HENRY², THOMAS¹) was born 1693 in Varena Parish Henrico County Virginia, and died 1759 in Halifax County Virginia. He married MARY MAGDELENE CHASTAIN 1719 in Henrico County Virginia, daughter of ETIENNE CHASTAIN and JEANNE LAUROAT.

Notes for THOMAS PRUITT:
Thomas and Mary settled further up the James Riber from his fathers land at Almond Creed, for when Goochland County was formed from Henrico County in 1727, Thomas was one of the first residents to this area, Thomas pruchased land on Stocks Creek, Amelia County, Virginia in 1737, and resided there until his move to southern Virginia, On July 19 1745, Thomas began to dispose of his land holdings on Stock;s Creek, and over the next two years , purchased 1,000 acres on Catawaba Creek in Brunswick (Luenburg) County Virginia. In 1752 the portion of Lunenburg County where Thomas lived was placed in the newly organized Halifax County. On May 16 1759 Thomas Pruitt, blacksmith, gave three of his sons, John Farmer Prewitt,(Pruitt) Renny Prewitt, and Abraham Prewitt, 150 acres each on Catawba Creek, Halifax County Virginia, All these deeds were witnessed by Thomas Prewitt Jr. and William Prewitt. It appears that
Thomas Prewitt died about 1759 and that his son Thomas Prewitt gained control of the estate.

Notes for MARY MAGDELENE CHASTAIN:
Mary Chastain was the widow of Nicholas Durcray (No children of this marriage)
Mary and Nicholas were French Hugenots, and this is believed to be the only Hugenot connection with the Prewitt (Pruitt) family.
In the year 1699, over three hundered French Hugenots arrieved in Goochland County Virginia and settled in the town of Manakin named after the Monacan Indians . There were four debarkations and the names of the ships were PETER and ANthony and Le Nasseau.
