ROHRERI am searching the world over for the Jacob & Magdelena Rohrer descendants. I also would like any information that can be shared about Jacob's parents. Alsace-Lorraine, (al'sas.le.ran') a small strip of land dividing the two countries of France and Germany. Alsace-Lorraine was a country fought over frequently by the French and Germans. Alsace-Lorraine was originally the home of the Rohrers. Jacob Rohrer was born November 7, 1788 in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. Jacob learned the trade of weaving. Jacob married Anna J. and started a family in Switzerland. In the spring of 1824 Jacob, Anna, his wife and three of his children, Jacob, Jr., Emily (or Catherine) and Anna Jr. decided to come to America. They boarded a flat boat on the Aare River and began their journey. They continued down the Aare River to the Rhine. Once on the Rhine River they continued to Antwerp in Holland where they boarded a ship bound for New York. While enroute to America, Jacob and his wife had a fourth child, Elizabeth. The voyage lasted six weeks and landed at New York (according to family logs). They continued their journey from New York to Pittsburgh by oxen and wagon. In Pittsburgh they took a flat boat down the Ohio River and landed at the mouth of Captina Creek. They traveled up Captina Creek to its headwaters and then crossed over the hills to the headwaters of the East Fork at Duck Creek and continued down this stream to a place located two miles above Harrietsville, Ohio where they settled down and built their home. Anna J. Sr. failed to endure the hardships of pioneer life and in 1829 she died and was buried on the hill behind the house. Jacob's second wife was Magdelena Bruni. Jacob and Magdelena were both of German descent. Magdelena never learned to speak English. She spoke German all of her life. Jacob and Magadelena had eight (8) children; four girls - Rosanna, Caroline, Mary and Susetta and four boys - John, Samuel, Christian and David. Jacob and Magdelena lived on the Rohrer farm located about two miles above Harrietsville, Ohio Noble County on Duck Creek. Both Jacob and Magdelena are buried at the Lutheran Church Cemetery near Harrietsville. The Jacob Rohrer farm was later owned by son, David. In later years the farm was owned by David's son David Frend Rohrer. In comparing a plot map of the 1870's at the Noble County Courthouse with todays (1990's) plot maps, this shows that Jacob's original farm has been divided into three separate parcels and now owned by Ernest Rohrer, Roy Rohrer and Raymond and Katherine Smithberger. The original house that Jacob built still stands today. It has had additions and renovations. The gentleman that lives in the house today is in the process of restoring the house. It has been moved from the original location close to a creek to higher ground. |
