Lucille came from a family of seven children. Her parents were both born in Hardin County, Iowa; Maude Johnson (b. near Steamboat Rock, Iowa) and John Henry Heffern (b. near Hubbard, Iowa). Maude's parents were Samuel Johnson, and Mary (Sharar,Meeks)Johnson. Samuel and Mary are buried in the Xenia cemetery which at one time was located in the town of Secor, Iowa which is no longer incorporated. Lucille's father, John Henry Heffern's parents were John and Bridget (Hayes) Heffern. They came to the United States from County Limerick,Ireland. They first settled in Dutchess County, New York where John's father, James Heffern and his two brothers, Thomas and Perry was born. The family eventually came to Hardin County and were land owners. Their names are listed in plat books of Hardin County. James Heffern was listed as a farmer and cattle man. He was married to Elizabeth (Rousseau) Heffern. Elizabeth's family came from Whitley County, Indiana and were of french ancestry. James and Elizabeth were parents of three sons, including John Henry Heffern. The Heffern family plot is located at St. Mary's Cemetery in Eldora Iowa. The Tolstead reasearch focuses on the ancestors of Donald Tolstead. The Tolstead(aka Tolstedt)family has roots in central Iowa. Donald Tolstead's father, Harold Tolstead was born in St. Anthony, Iowa. His father Lewis and mother Lucy Pease Tolstead lived in Marshall County before relocating to South Dakota and Minnesota. Lewis Tolstedt's parents were Ulrich and Eliza (Martin) Tolstedt. Ulrich came from Oldenberg, Germany and emigrated to the United States were he became a union soldier during the civil war. Ulrich met his wife Eliza Martin in north eastern Illinois. Eliza Martin was born in Augusta, Alberta Canada, and emigrated with her parents to the United States, living in Illinois. Donald Tolstead's mother Lydia Hedwig Stern was born in Mower County, Minnesota. Her parents, Ferdinand Stern and Albertina Sukow Stern emigrated to the United States from Pommern,Germany living the rest of their lives in Mower County on a farm and later in Austin, Minnesota. |
