Enlisted as a private in Company D, 31st (East) Tennessee Infantry, February 8, 1862.In June, 1863, this unit was officially designated as the 39th Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment.
He was captured, July 3, 1863, at Vicksburg, Mississippi, and was released in a prisoner exchange on July 10, 1863. He continued serving until the end of the war when he surrendered at Marion, Virginian in April, 1865.

He applied for Confederate Pension on July 30, 1912 and again on August 8, 1920. Both were filed in Harrison Co., KY.
