|I am researching the RONK family. I can trace the RONK'S of my line back to a John C. Ronk in Binghamton, Broome County New York. The 1855 Census would put his birth at circa 1812. His wife was is listed as Mary Ann [SMEADE] -- born circa June 1813.She died October 14, 1867. Children listed on the 1855 Census are Sarah (born 1837), Orville (born 1839), Julius (born 1840), John (born 1843)and william (born 1846).
Edgar A. Ronk is listed on 1880 Census of Broome County, Binghamton, NY -- He was 23 years old (therefore birth circa 1857). Other information I have confirms he is the brother of John Ronk listed in the 1855 Census (details later). It would be interesting to look for Edgar Ronk on the 1860 Census and see if he is with John Ronk as a 3 year old.
The National Archives has the following information on a John E. Ronk (Co. C., 27th N.Y. Inf. and Co. F, 1st NY Vet. Cav. Invalid 186.972; Cert. 152539 widow 114.525 902.593. Afidavit of Arabella W. Ronk No. 1142525 on 17th March 1921, Binghamton county of Broome). "His father was John C. Ronk and his mother was Mary Smeade. He has no sisters [contradicts 1855 Census, maybe his wife did not know of Sarah listed in 1855 census]. He has one brother living, Edgar A. Ronk, Ry. Way Mail Clerk, (probably retired), 126 River St. Willoughby, Ohio. He has one-half brother, Charles Ronk, R.R. man and he lives on Munsell Street, Binghamton, N.Y."
Edgar A. Ronk's internment record (He was buried in Cleveland, OH) reveals he was born 11/3/1855 in Binghamton, N.Y., with his father being John Ronk and his mother being Sarah Smead. Edgar A. Ronk's death certificate reveals he had a fractured skull from an automobile accident on June 8, 1928 and subsequently died on June 12, 1928. The death certificate lists Edna Ronk as his wife and further reveals Edgar was born 11/3/1855. It also lists his father as John Ronk and mother as Sarah Smead. The information was provided by his son Harry D. Ronk. On the death certificate Harry D. states that Edgar's father (John) came from Holland.
The 1855 Census (referenced above) and used to link John C. Ronk [John Ronk on the Census] and Mary Ann Ronk (his wife) to John E. Ronk and Edgar Ronk states that he (John C. Ronk) was born in NY. (This statement contradicts Harry D. Ronk's citation on Edgar's death certificate that Edgar's father (John C. Ronk) was from Holland. To complicate things further in the 1900 census Edgar A. and Edna N. Ronk indicate that Edgar's father was born in N.Y. Furthermore, while Edgar's own son (Harry D. Ronk) states on the 1900 census that his father (Edgar A. Ronk) was born in England, Edgar (himself) indicates he was born in N.Y. This is confirmed by Edgar's Death Certificate. Do you have any thoughts as to why these conflicts arise from different sources of information?
Edgar A. Ronks Estate indicates three sons: Harry D. Ronk (born 1879) from Kenmore, NY; Neal B. Ronk living in Cleveland at the time (born 1881) and Walter G. Ronk (born 1884) from Buffalo, NY.
Where do I fit in? Well Harry D. Ronk was my Grandfather's father.
