Archibald McDougald -- written by Corinne McDougald Gaddy and taken from REFLECTIONS OF ASHLEY COUNTY, page 323.

The McDougald family was established in Ashley County around 1858 with the arrival of Archibald McDougald, his wife Sarah M. Gilmore, and their children. They were part of a steady stream of pioneers pouring out of the Carolinas in the first half of the eighteen hundreds, walking beside ox-drawn wagons loaded with their few earthly possessions and their plentiful offspring. The land back East was wearing out and the settlements were getting crowded. Working their way through Alabama and Mississippi, they came seeking a better life than they had left behind. In doing so they implanted a civilization on a wilderness and populated it with sturdy pioneer stock.
Archibald McDougald, of Scotts lineage, was born in North Carolina about 1810, the son of Daniel McDougald. By 1834 he had migrated to Conecuh County, Alabama and married Sarah Gilmore, daughter of Jacob Gilmore. It is believed that four children were born there, but a twin died later and has not been identified. Surviving children were John (born about 1835, married Frances Elizabeth Walker 1865, died March 5, 1862); Nancy (born 1836, married Henry Dean); and Jacob (born November 29, 1838, married Elmira Elizabeth Franklin Rodgers June 18, 1865, died April 9, 1914)
The McDougalds and the Gilmores moved to Lauderdale County, Mississippi by 1839 and nine more McDougald children were born there. They were Mary (born 1841, married Hubert B. McGill September 14, 1877); Daniel (born April 21, 1844, married Sarah Caroline Stell December 6, 1866, died February 24, 1905); Joseph (born 1845); Eliza (born 1846); Ellen Caroline (born 1848, married H.B.McGill October 7, 1867); Bryant (born July 12, 1851, married Flora Hazeltine Buchanan December 15, 1870); William L. (born January 26, abt. 1854, married Pallie Johnson, second wife was Lucy Jennings); Thomas Allen (born January 26, abt. 1854, married Emma Powell March 26, 1881, second wife was Elizabeth Hewing, died January 29, 1912); and Elizabeth (born 1855, married Henry Anderson November 3, 1896).
Archibald moved his family to Ashley county about 1858, settling in the Bearhouse Township where he and his sons farmed. Etheridge's HISTORY OF ASHLEY COUNTY mentions the McDougalds as leading citizens of the Berea community.
In 1863, Archibald and Sarah, who had withstood so many hardships of pioneer life during their westward migration, were drowned as their wagon was swept downstream in a flash flood when they were fording a stream in Ashley County. The Civil War had already taken its toll on the family when this tragedy occurred. John, their firstborn son, had died in the service of the Confederacy the previous year. Jacob, the second son, took the guardianship of the younger children. Archibald and Sarah McDougald are buried in the old Griswold Cemetery at Berea, Arkansas. Many descendants still live in Arkansas. Others have continued the migration.
