      5. Charles Earl2 Roswell (Joseph1) was born January 1857 in Canada, and died February 17, 1907 in Mt. Clemens, Macomb County, Michigan. He married Frances Thedora Wear Abt. 1879, daughter of William Wear and Velmenia Osborne.

Oral History: Recollections about Charles Earl from Charles Alexander Roswell (his grandson):
- He had three brothers, one of which was named Otto or Oscar
- During his lifetime Charles Earl was a Presbyterian minister (but not an ordained one). He worked as a lumberjack, owned a general store in a small town where he had to do everything from pull teeth to act as undertaker.
- He believed Charles Earl died from a kick in the head by a horse
- Charles Earl was a 32nd degree Mason.

Oral History: Recollections from Gilbert Francis Roswell (his grandson):
- Heard as a youth that one of Charles Earl's brothers settled in New Mexico and owned a large plot of land that came to be known as Roswell Corners (it is not known if there is any connection to Roswell, New Mexico).
- Charles Earl also had something to do with the establishment of Mount Clemens, Michigan as a health (hot mineral bath) center - As he drove there with Dora (Gil's grandmother), she remarked to him, "Well if you don't like the smell, blame your grandfather".

Birth: Grave marker states 1855 as birth date. 1900 Census states Jan, 1857. Death Certificate states February 2, 1857.

Marriage: Married 21 years at the time of 1900 census (filled out June 21, 1900). Married 27 years per death certificate (filled out February 19, 1907), so about 1879-1880.

Death Certificate: State of Michigan, Certificate 397, Register No. 30.
Recorded March 6, 1907. Info from certificate:

- Died at #96 Dickinson Avenue, 3rd ward.

- Died February 17, 1907 (age 51 years, 17 days). Doctor's notes say he died February 19.

- Married at age 27 (assumed to be the number of years married, per info in 1900 census)

Notes for Frances Thedora Wear:
Oral History: According to Charles A. Roswell (grandson), she went by the name "Dora" all her life. He did not find out her first name was Frances until her death. Both her death certificate and her son's death certificate (Charles Gilbert Roswell) lists her middle initial as "T". The 1880 Census lists her name as "Thedora". According to Gilbert F. Roswell (grandson), she was born in a log cabin; he said she gave him a photograph of it. Gil believes she was born in Oscoda, Michigan.

- Informant of death: Mrs. Leota V. Scott, 48 Monterey Ave. (This person is her daughter).
- Date of death: August 23, 1933 (age 73 years, 11 months, 13 days).

Burial: Death certificate states Mt. Clemens, Detroit. Gil Roswell (her grandson) said she is buried at Clinton Grove Cemetary in Mt. Clemens. However, when Charles A. Roswell (her grandson) went to the cemetary in the 1980's he did not find her listed in Lot 27, which is the family lot purchased by her husband Charles E. Roswell in 1904. Frances may be buried in another part of the cemetary.

- Undertaker: L. V. Barker or Baker (spelling hard to read), on 12551 Woodward Avenue
- Cause of death: Hyperparathyroidism; Anersia (secondary); Myocardial degeneration; Decalcification of bones and skeleton. Note: The second and third causes were very hard to read. Anersia may be an old spelling of "anergia", the lack of immunity to an antigen. The myocardium is the heart muscle.

Comment: In the 1900 census, Frances T. Roswell stated that she had been the mother of 5 children, but that only 4 were living (see Charles Earl Roswell notes).

This is confirmed by Charles E. Roswell's death certificate, which states at the time of his death that only 2 of his 5 children were living.

Oral History: His nephews, Charles A. and Gilbert F. Roswell, said she married James Scott about 1929. The marriage only lasted until 1931. Charles A. said he took all her money, to which Gil later wrote, "Nuts, she never had any". They say she is buried at Clinton Grove cemetary.
