Family legend states that Bennett "Frozen Foot" Doing came from Wales in 1760 and fought with Gen'l George Washington at Valley Forge where he suffered frost bite resulting in the amputation of both feet and the knickname "Frozen Foot" His records have been seen in the National Archives. He enlisted in Richmond. Bennett received "6 3/4 dol" per month for his services. A Francis Doingfought with the Continental Army a year before Bennett and received his pay in pounds. (Relationship not known, but presumed to be brothers.) Benjamin Doing is said to have been
the postumous son of Bennett. (Bennett died Sept. 1781, Benjamin was born March 1782 - both in RI) Benjamin 1m. Miss Usher and had son (probably Horace) and 2m. Matilda Harvey. There were three children (Benjamin S. (or L)., Joseph Francis, Sara Ann) born in RI. The family moved west to Chenango Co., NY, some (Horace & family) staying there, and the others to Watauqua Co. NY in 1820, where Benjamin's son, David was born in 1821, a dau. was b. ca 1825, James B. was b. ca 1832 and Ann M. (m. Joseph Poats) was b. 21 April 1835. Benjamin S.(or L), Joseph Francis and David were found in PA in the 1850 census. David moved to Clyde OH where his family, including father, Benjamin (d. 1856), were buried. Joseph Francis and his youngest brother, Charles Henderson Doing were found in Indiana in 1860. Charles returned east (Maryland) when 2nd son, Park Benjamin Doing, was young.
