The name has been spelled, Rosney, Rosny and in the Irish language, o’Rosna.

There is a rumour that we are descended from an old French Rosny family but no proof of this has been found to date.

The earliest records we found for the Rossney families were here in Ireland, where some of their descendants still live. These families were traced back to the early 1800’s in three main locations, South Dublin (my own family), Celbridge in County Kildare and County Offaly where there were many early family branches. We have not found any link between the Kildare family and the Offaly families.

Rossney were found in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South America, U.K. and USA and most of them are descended from the Irish families.

The main U.K. family branches are descended from Thomas Rosney from Ireland but we don’t know where in Ireland and some of the U.S.A. branches also originated in Ireland, but again we don't know where.

We have recently discovered that our earliest, Dublin, Rossney ancestor, Michael Rossney, was born in Offaly in 1797.

We have built up an extensive database of family records, thanks largely to the research carried out by family members, friends and fellow researchers around the world.

If you wish to enquire about information on your Rossney ancestors I will be happy to try to help you or put you in contact with other family members who are researching your branch of the family.

We have recently learned that my great great grandfather, Michael Rossney above, was a Waterloo veteran but we don't know which regiment he served in. We did not find him in the Waterloo Medal Roll book. If we could find his regiment, his records and who his next of kin was, then we might be able to trace my family back another generation. If anyone out there has any information which might help us to find Michael’s records I would be very grateful.

My email address is justin at rossney dot com (all lower case and no spaces and normal @ and dot)

Some of the other families that we are researching are, Greens and Kinsellas from Coolgreany, County Wexford, Doyles from County Wexford and Kirk and Watters from County Louth.
